STAFF’S ANNUAL DANCE GUESTS AT MAYFAIR LOUNGE Messrs J. E. Gudgeon (chairman), G. W. Washbourn, E. S. Williams, R. J. Stevens, L. N. Austin, A. P. O’Callaghan, F. H. Boyce (honorary treasurer), and F. C. Milne (honorary secretary) were members of the committee responsible for organising the annual dance held by«. the staff of the Bank of New Zealand at the Mayfair Lounge last evening. As in previous years the dance proved most successful, and the guests spent a very pleasant time dancing to the music of the Mayfair Lounge orchestra. The guests of honour were Mr H. L. Garth, assistant manager, and _ Mrs Garth-, Mr J. Mann, acting assistant manager, and Mrs Mann, Mr H. Rodd (Commercial Bank), and Mrs Rodd, Mr K Butters (National Bank of New Zealand, Ltd.,) and Mrs Butters. Mrs Garth wore a frock of fine meadow green lace made with puffed shoulder sleeves and finished with a floral Spray at the neckline; Mrs Mann’s frock of black craquelle was brightly patterned in floral design, a corsage spray repeating the colour scheme; Mrs Rodd wore a V-necked frock of parma violet lace mounted on a contrasting foundation, a small posy giving a finishing touch to .he bodice, flower also provided trimming on Mrs Butters’ frock of cyclamen georgette. Miss Edna Caven, who assisted the committee, wore a claret ring velvet frock with a large cluster of van-col-oured flowers on the bodice. Amongst those present were Mesdames A. W. Chrystal. G. C. MEETING OF DIRECTORS

NATIONAL GIRLS’ , WORK SECRETARY APPOINTED

The monthly meeting of the board of directors of the Young Women’s Christian Association was held yesterday, and in the absence of Mrs B, H. Giimour (chairwoman), Mrs W. McKay presided. A letter from national headquarters advised that Miss Jean Campbell (Canada) had accepted the position of national girls t work secretary lor New Zealand, and would commence duties in February. She had been asked .to attend the World’s Youth Congress at Vassar, and also the World’s Council of the Young Women’s Christian Association in Canada. . . Particulars were also received of the New Zealand itinerary of Miss Ruth Woodsmall, general secretary of the World’s Young Women’s Christian Association office, Geneva, who will arrive in New Zealand in February. . The national headquarters of the association asked for the co-operation of Christchurch members in making plans for the women’s court at the Centennial Exhibition. The resignation of Mrs B. C. Penney was received, and leave of absence was granted to Mrs R. Ambridge Details of the annual meeting, which will be held this month, were discussed and completed. . It was decided to ask Miss Law, national general secretary, to visit Christchurch in October and to conduct a board and committee conierelThe devotional opening and the Benediction were given by Deaconess Spencer Smith.

ANNUAL DANCE

AKAROA GOLF CLUB Members of the Akaroa Golf Club held a most enjoyable dance in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Akaroa, when the guests included many visitors from the Bays and Christchurch. Music was supplied by Martin Winiata’s Orchestra, and extras were played by Mrs J. McNabb. The hall was effectively decorated with spring blossom, greenery and baboons, a special feature being a large golf ball suspended from the centre of the ceiling. Mrs W. B. Ramsay was in charge of supper arrangements and Mrs W. J. Thompson was convener of the decorations committee. Mr W. J. Thompson was master of ceremonies, and Messrs J. Le Lievre and W. H. Priest acted as doorkeepers. Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs- J. McNabb, Mrs J. Ferguson and Mr C. Kingsford, Mrs J. McNabb and Mr R, Andrew.

Mr D. I. Macdonald, a foundation member of the Christchurch Repertory Theatre Society, and of the committee of. the society, will leave on Saturday- for a visit to Britain, travelling via America. To honour him, the bommittee bf the society held a luncheon party at Ballantyne’s yesterday, when the best wishes of the society were extended to Mr Macdonald. Mr T. W. ANNUAL DANCE AT COURTENAY

A most enjoyable time was spent by guests who attended the annual dance of the Court Pride of Courtenay Lodge Ancient Order of Foresters, held in me Courtenay Agricultural and 'Pastoral Association’s Hall. The hall was effectively decorated with coloured streamers, and flowering shrubs, and me lounge and supper tables were bright with spring flowers. Music for dancing was played by Colin Campbell’s orchestra, and extras by Misses L. Fussell (Leeston). J. McKie (Christchurch), Lr Thompson, and Mrs S. Hart. Messrs S. Hart and R.
