ROUND TABLE CLUB
ADDRESS ON GOLD
DREDGING
THREE SPEAKERS AT FORTNIGHTLY MEETING
Mrs M. Hullett presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Young Women’s Christian Association’s Business and Professional Women’s Round Table Club. Mrs L. G. Pocock continued her talk on the history of Germany, covering briefly the period from the Napoleonic wars to Bismarck. Mr F. G. Dunn, who spoke on "Gold Dredging,” compared New Zealand conditions with those on the Rand. He explained that on the Rand miners had to bore one and a half miles down into the earth, and in New Zealand it was only necessary to bore 1000 feet down in the gold districts. The first dredge had been made in New Zealand to meet New Zealand conditions, for it was found that large areas of difficult ground had to be worked to obtain a small amount of gold, and that machinery must be used. The supplies of alluvia] gold are now almost exhausted, and scientific means have to be used to keep dredging plants efficient, said Mr Dunn.
Members were greatly interested in a course on practical psychology which was commenced by Mrs B Burns. Votes of thanks were passed to the three speakers by Miss M. Walmsley. Miss B. Wilson, and Miss L, .Byron,
