A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Archbishop Julius was carried last night by the Christchurch Fire Board. The chairman (Mr T. M. Charters) said it was probably safe to say there was no greater-loved _ man in any community than Archbishop Julius, and his outstanding personality and kindly sympathy would be greatly missed by all.

Mr W. Whitcombe was a passenger for the north by the steamer express last evening. Mr R. McGillivray, District Superintendent of the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture, has left for Ashburton, and will spend the rest of the week in South Canterbury, including a visit to the Mackenzie Country.

Mr A. van Bochove, assistant-manager in Sydney of the Royal Packet Navigation Company, which operates the direct shipping service between New Zealand and the Netherlands Indies, returned to Christchurch from Dunedin yesterday.

Mr Ernest Jenner tendered his resignation from the conductors!} ip of the Royal Christchurch Musical Society last evening. The resignation, which was made from of health, and because of pressure of other work, was accepted with regret by- the meeting. Mr F. A. Bullock, chairman of the' committee, was appointed conductor until the end of the year, when a new appointment will be made. The new chairman of the committee is Mr T. Andrews.

KISSEL ✓ IF*!** ASSOCIATION It[.»GRiU.) , WELLINGTON, September 13. “We are making investigations with the idea of some day, fairly soon probably, starting further development on the Waikato river,” said Mr F. T. M. Kissel, chief electrical engineer for the Public Works. Department,* referring to what the department was doing to meet the prospective demands for electricity. He made this comment at the annual conference in Wellington to-day of the Secretaries’ branch of the New Zealand Electric Power Boards and Supply Authorities’ Association. “I noted quite recently in southern newspapers that during this conference the prospective power shortage in the South Island would probably be discussed. I would like the conference, if it does consider the subject, to discuss it with me or my officers before doing anything too drastic. I am more concerned about the prospective shortage in the North Island than in the South, and particularly the southern portion of the North Island. We have hopes, however, that we will get through the critical year of 1941, which is when the difficulty will occur if it is going to. “We have arrangements with the comparatively large steam plants in Auckland and Wellington to help us in 1940 and 1941. I believe that they will be running as part of our system by arrangement with the authorities which own them; 7 ’

The year had been a phenomenal one as far as the growth of the load was concerned, continued Mr Kissel. He referred to two graphs published in the Public Works Statement which illustrated the growth of the load in the two islands. A particular feature in them, he said, was the very rapid increase in the load which had taken place in the last two years. There had been a particularly large increase in the amount of power supplied to the Dunedin City Council,
