Violet Day

The annual appeal of the Plunket Society may be recommended to the citizens of Christchurch in full confidence that their appreciation needs only a reminder, not an awakening. The society’s effort has been applied, for years, in the most profitable direction: to the strengthening of the foundations of national health and welfare. It has given the country valuable lives that would, without it. have been lost; it

has enabled infants to grow up into vigorous childhood and youth and maturity, when their chances of such vigour, without Plunket aid and skill, were negligible: it has diminished pain, sickness, and distress at every stage in the bearing and raising of children; it has widely spread all the advantages with which infancy can begin and its development proceed. This national service has not been performed and is not to-day performed • without a very large measure of voluntary aid. To be main-' tained and to be extended, it needs the giving as well as the gratitude of every wellwisher; and there is no better way of expressing praise and gratitude than by contributing to the funds of a society which has so good a use for every penny.
