INVESTMENT IN TRANSPORT
INCREASE OF £50,000,000 IN TEN YEARS
BIGGEST RISE IN ROADS AND VEHICLES
[From Our Own Reporter.] OAMARU, September 13. In the last 10 years the value of capital investments in transport has risen from £172,167,000 to £229,139,000. Th.'a was revealed by the Minister for Transport (the Hon. R. Semple), in a statement made at Oamaru this evening. The figures quoted by the Minister have only just been taken out. By far the biggest increase in value was in road transport, inclusive f roads and vehicles.
The figures for 1938 follow with the 1928 figures given in parenthesis:— Railways—This figure was written down considerably by the last Government—£ss,9Bs,ooo (£58,797,000); motor transport, including motor vehicles and roads, £147,604,000 (£89,587,000); tramways, £5,550,000 (£5,037,000); shipping, £19,000,000 (£18,746,000); air transport, £1,000,000 (nil). The total figure covering the value of these investments in 1938 was £229,139,000, and in 1923 £172,167,000. The Minister gave close details -f the investments in motor transport. The total value of vehicles rose from £37,587,000 to £66,104,000, and in roads from £52,000,000 to £81,500,000, the gross totals being an increase from £89,587,000 to £147,604,000.
