OFFICIAL FORECASTS
[THE PRESS Special Service.) WELLINGTON, September 13. The weather forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough, issued at 5 p.m. by the Meteorological Office, Wellington, and dealing with the 24 hours following the time o- issue, is as follows: Strong north-west wit. 3s to gales, with boisterous conditions in parts of the back country. Weather mainly fair to line and warm, but rain in the mountains and extending at times some distance eastward. Seas moderate, but rough offshore. WEST COAST The forecast for the West Coast of the South Island is:— Moderate to strong and squally north-west to westerly winds, reaching gale force at times. Weather unsettled, with further rain and some heav: falls, but occa- < sional bright intervals. Temperatures mild. Seas rough. DOMINION The forecast for the Dominion is:— Unsettled in districts with a westerly aspect, with rain at times. Some heavy falls probable in Taranaki and on the West Coast of the South Island. Mainly fair in eastern districts, but rain extending at times to scattered parts of these also. Temperatures warm east of the ranges. Mild elsewhere. Pressure is still high to the north, but a series of deep westerly depressions is advancing from southern Australia across the south Tasman Sea and the South Island. Winds—North-west to west prevailing, but changing in places occasionally to south-west. Force moderate to strong generally and gales probable in many places from Taranaki and Hawke’s Bay southward. Seas (New Zealand waters)— Slight to moderate in coastal waters on most of the east coast. Very rough at times in the Cook and Foveaux Straits areas. Otherwise rather rough to rough. Eastern Tasman Sea—Strong, squally winds to gales from between northwest and south-west. Seas rough. CHRISTCHURCH WEATHER Yesterday was fine and warm in Christchurch with sunshine in the morning. A strong north-westerly wind blew most of the day. The maximum temperature was 69.5 degrees.
At 1 o’clock this morning the sky was cloudy and there was a moderate easterly wind. The temperature was 50 degrees, and the barometer was falling at 29.89 inches.
IN OTHER PLACES
Auckland—Fine, sunny weather, with a moderate wind from the south-west ruled during the day. The maximum temperature was 66 degrees. The barometer was fairly steady with the reading at 5 p.m. 30.15 inches. Wellington—The sky was overcast and there was a strong squally northwest wind. Although the sky appeared threatening at times, no rain fell. Temperatures were mild, the minimum on Monday night being 50.4 degrees and the maximum yesterday 56.7 degrees. At 3 p.m. the temperature was 56.5 degrees and the barometer 29.86 inches.
Dunedin—There was a strong southerly wind yesterday morning, but it moderated m the afternoon. Passing clouds interrupted the sunshine, but temperatures were warm, the maximum being 68 degrees. The barometer rose sharply to 29.75 inches.
