COAL STRIKE IN AUSTRALIA
Government Not To
Intervene
REPORTED DECISION OF CABINET (UNITED PRESS assocuiior—<o-t» grt.) (Received September 12. 8 pm.) CANBERRA, September 12. The Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons) announced that the fYderal Cabinet had decided not to intervene in the coal strike as the dispute was one for an ordinary industrial tribunal. The strike is now fully effective in New South Wales. Queensland, Victoria, and Tasmania. It is stated in union circles that a deputation of miners urged that the- Government should convene * conference representing the miners and owners with an independent chairman to consider the mens claims.'
The non-federation miners ->f Rothbury have offered to remain idle for the period of the strike. The coal won in these pits has been considered the only substantial source of northern coal available during the strike.
The members of the Engine-driv-ers’ and Firemen’s Union employed in the mines decided to cease work immediately if their claims for improved conditions are not acceded to.
