Debutante Stakes The uncertainty of two-year-old racing at this stage was exemplified In the win of Pas de Cheval In the Debutante Stakes, who was ninth in the order of favouritism. Pas de Cheval won well. He hit the front almost In a stride, and never looked like being caught. He was followed in the running by Silver Bat, Kohl, and Endorsement together, with Tableau at the head of the bunch, and by the time they were entering the straight Submission had run up behind Tableau. Pas de Cheval had no difficulty in winning comfortably from Tableau, who just headed Submission. Endorsement was fourth, followed by Kobi, Silver Bat, Authoress, and Military Maid. Pas de Cheval was forward, and gave none or the others a chance, but Submission was unlucky. She and Portal drew the two inside numbers, but they both failed to Jump out. The Hurdle Race Curie Scored his winning double over hurdles In solid style. He was allowed to settle down well, and was in the rear for over a mile, but just as Mungakaha had taken the lead off Ambition and Aiguille, Curie made his run. He had come up on terms with Mungakaha at the last fence, and held his own In the run home. Ambition was a moderate third, followed by Tail Light and Revival. All the Way Royal Choice hopped out smartly in the Trial Handicap and led all the way. The further they went the greater became his winning margin. Coronation, Maiwai, Minga. Morning Flight, and Fiancee were his nearest attendants, but of these only Maiwai ran on at all, and he was able to hold off a late run by Rustem for second, with Morning Flight fourth. Then came Minga, Coronation, and Patches. Ruling Lady and Miss Waitarere fell. Fiancee and Minga failed to Improve on the first day’s form, but in any event Royal Choice was too good. Wanganui Guineas The Guineas resulted in a decisive win for Russian Ballet. There was a long delay at the start, the two fillies, Russian Ballet and Homily, being very much on their toes. Gay Son eventually got out best from Homily. Russian Ballet, Amigo, and Sudan, and they settled down With Gay Son and Russian Ballet making the pace together from Sudan and Homuy together, clear of Amigo and Rehearsal, the rest being brought up by Peerless, and Night Attack. Gay Son was being hard ridden on the turn to hold his place, and Russian Ballet led him into the straight, with Amigo closing up. Amigo finished on, but he never looked likely to catch Russian Ballet. Gay Son hung . on for third from Homily, who was followed* by Sudan. Taurangi, Rehearsal, Peerless, Lord Cavendish, and Night Attack. The winner was particularly well handled by B. H. Morris, and her win was clean cut. Amigo put up a creditable performance, and hung on well. He would have been more difficult had he made an earlier move in the running before the teal pace was on. Gay Son stopped over the last two furlongs. Middle’s Success Brazen King just failed to improve sufficiently and win the Higgle Handicap after he had allowed Trailer to make the Pace for seven furlongs. He was followed Into the straight by Middle, and Middle tot up in the last stride. A Dead-beat Misurina nearly brought off a sensational surprise in the Moutoa Hack Handicap, and as it was, his dead-heat with Barley Almond gave his backers* a sup•tantial win. This pair was always In front, Misurina making the pace, others bandy being Sly Fox, Granvale, Te Huia, •nd Nereus, while actually leading for a food way was Screen Star, who, however, was done with a long way from bome. Misurina and Barley Almond drew away in the straight and had Barley Almond steered home straight instead of crowding Misurina. the latter would have ■won. Happy Landing, always under pressure, hung on solidly for third, followed by Sunny Blonde, Viracious, Te Huia, and Granvale. A Double Success Orate won the Owen Handicap, this tuno*iy Iran the Ught-welght
