WHIPPET RACING

GRAND NATIONAL MEETING EVENTS DECIDED AT NEW BRIGHTON The increasing .popularity of whippet racing was shown by the large attendance at- the New Zealand Whippet Racing Club’s Grand': National meeting held ac Bower Park, Burwood, on Saturday afternoon. The meeting was arranged to take place at Bushqy Park, Rlccarton, but because of the weather and the possibility of injury to the dogs, was transferred to the Bower Park course. Amongst the Visitors was Mr G. N. Kemp, president of the National Whippet Association, and the Dunedin Whippet Racing Club, who was accompanied by -Mrs Kemp. There were 25. events, with 130 entries, including some leading West Coast dogs. The racing was of a very high standard, and in many of the events the finishes were exceptionally close. The ground was in excellent order, and the whole programme was carried out capably by officials.

The chief events were the Grand National open hurdles handicap, won by R. C. Smith’s Hector’s Pride, and • the Winter Cup, won by R. C. Smith’s Red Step. In the Masonic Challenge Cup match race over 200 yards, Mrs H. W. Howard’s Flying Win, the present holder, secured an easy win over the challenger. Dent and Smith’s Royden. Results:—
