WEATHER IN AUGUST

RAIN AT KIMBERLEY The rainfall at Kimberley for 'August was 1.14 inches, compared with I. inches for the same month last year, and 0.89 inches for 1936. Rain fell on four days, the maximum fall being on August 9, when 45 points fell. The average rainfall for August over six years is 1.38 inches. The total rainfall for the eight months ended on August 31 was 23.89 inches, against 18.06 inches for the corresponding month last year, and 24.06 inches in 1936. There was a fail of three inches of snow on August 4. Since the beginning of September rain has _ fallen on three days for a total of 3.42 inches. CARD EVENING AT KAIKOURA Members of the Kaikoura Croquet Club and friends held a card evening at the residence of Mr and Mrs R. Strahl. The proceeds were given to the funds of the club. The winners were Mrs H. Stove, and Mr H. Baines. Consolation prizes were won by Mrs J. P. Smith and Mr I. Strahl. CRIBBAGE TOURNAMENT AT KIMBERLEY A cribbage tournament between teams representing Darfield and Kimberley. played in the Kimberley Hall recently, was won by the Darfidld team with 107 points to 76 points. Mr S. Higgins and Miss E. Bull (Darfield) won the first prize, and Mr R. Boulton, jun., and Mrs A. Boulton (Kimberley team) the second prize.

KIRWEE TENNIS CLUB’S SOCIAL

A social evening, organised by the Kirwee Tennis Club, was held in the Kirwee Hall recently Prizes given by Mr N. Wilson were won by Miss Rima Begg and Mr G. Begg, Mrs Sunckell, and Mr H. Skilling. Music for dancing was played by Miss Lucy Thompson, Mesdames S. Hart, and R. Wilson. Mr S. Hart was master of ceremonies.

EUCHRE PARTY AT CULVERDEN

■ A successful euchre party was held in the -Culverden School recently to augment the school funds, and attracted a large attendance. The women’s prize was won by Mrs C. J. Crothall, and the men’s by Mr W. Addis. *
