ST. ALBANS SCHOOL FAIR

FUNDS FOR IMPROVEMENTS

CHILDREN HAVE DAY OUT

Children of the St. Albans School and their parents and friends had a day out on Saturday, when the annual fair was held. The purpose is to raise funds to pay for a new radio and pub-lic-address system which has just been installed, for proposed extensions to the school library, and a gymnasium and assembly hall. The Minister for Education (the Hon. P. Fraser) sent the following telegram to Mr S. G. Holland. M.P., who opened the fair: —“I am happy to learn of the interest taken by the committee of the St. Albans School and its large band of supporters who are organising the carnival, which has my full approval. I warmly commend the people of the district for their splendid efforts in the cause of primary education.”

Mr Holland, who was introduced by Mr C. D. W. L. Sheppard, chairman of the school committee, commended the committee on. its enterprise and for all its efforts, which would no doubt be successfully rewarded. He congratulated the school on the lay-out of its grounds, and said that it was this which had caused the Government to purchase the extra land. An old steam tram of the Tramways Board made a trip from the Square to the school during the afternoon with about 300 passengers in trailers. Stalls and sideshows did good business, and ponies were favourites with the children. Good Returns Reported It was reported yesterday by a member of the organising committee that the returns from the carnival had come up to the highest expectations, and when all the moneys were in it was anticipated the objective would have been reached.
