RAILWAY IMPROVEMENTS

WORK NEAR CHRISTCHURCH

Many minor improvements in the railway net work near Christchurch have recently been effected or begun. The works comprise the provision of additional lighting at Hawarden station, electric lighting of signals at Kaiapoi, Belfast, Rangiora, Waipara, and Dunsandel, the installation of flash-light signals at a road-crossing near Amberley, and the installation of frame-levers at Rangiora and Rolleston. Another work recently begun was the rebuilding of the railway telephonepole line connecting stations between Waipara and Parnassus, a distance of 44 miles. This undertaking makes provision for an extension of the telephone system north of Parnassus as and when necessitated by the progress made on the railway line at Wharanui.
