"If any man can become a vicepresident of an organisation because he has a guinea to give away it is a rather peculiar honour," remarked Mr A. E. McPhail, retiring president of the Canterbury Rugby Union, at the annual meeting last night of the Sydenham Rugby Football Club. "The honour of being a vice-presi-dent should go to the men who have been of most service to the organisation," he added. Mr McPhail's remarks were made while the club was discussing a motion to appoint as vice-presidents only those who had given a donation during the last year. The motion was lost.
