A work which has been urged ever since the earthquake—the removal of the South African War Memorial at Napier, to a more suitable position than it occupies at the present time on the Marine Parade—was approved at the meeting of the Napier City Council last week, when it was decided to place a sum on the estimates for next year to have work carried out. It \yas suggested that t: 3 memorial be placed south of the Sound Shell. It was also decided by the council to recondition the memorial opposite the municipal baths, which was damaged by the earthquake of 1931. Willingness to collaborate with Auckland to save overlapping and expense in the celebration of the Wellington and Auckland centenaries in 1940 was expressed yesterday by the Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hislop). "Personally I should be very glad indeed to collaborate with Auckland, so as to avoid overlapping ot. unnecessary expenditure," he said, "and so as to ensure that the celebrations will be suitable to both cities and worthy of the occasion which is not only the centenary "of Wellington and Auckland, but also ot New Zealand."—Press Association. ...
