WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
WAIPARA The annual meeting of the Waipara Women's Institute was held in the local hall. Mrs Conway (vice-presi-dent) presided over a fair attendance. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring officers. It, was decided fn hold the Institute picnic on March 16 at the Leithfield beach. The competitions chosen for April were best bloom, any flower, and the prettiest cup, saucer and plate. The following officers were elected for the year:— President, Mrs E. Lopp; vice-presi-dent, Mrs A. McLachlan; secretary, Mrs R. Symonds (re-elected); treasurer, Miss P. McGuckin; committee, Mrs L. McGuckin, Mrs A. Conway. Mrs B. L. Symonds, Mrs L. Baker, Mrs F. Gainsford, Miss J. Potton. SOUTHBRIDGE Mrs H. J. Greenwood presided over a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Southbridge Women's Institute. The balance-sheet showed a small credit. Bouquets were presented to the president and secretary. Mrs G. B. Couch was unanimously elected president and the following a committee: Mesdames J. A. Carr, E. F. Davison, G. Watson, W. Lilley, R. F. Pilkington, W. C. Eggelton, G. M. Doyle, W. G. Hill and T. H. Bennett, and Misses M. Schnelle, E. Patterson, I. Lewton, E. Maw, R. Stace and E. | Sloan. Items were given by Mesdames A. Chase (Oamaru) and C. Cooper, Miss A. Brears and Mr D. Suckling, Miss Eggelton acting as accompanist. A competition (advertisements) was won by Mrs J. Ballagh, with Mrs W. J. Patterson second. Most points in the competitions for best garden blooms during the year were gained by Mrs J. Ballagh, with Mrs A. J. Inwood and Miss F. Greenwood equal second. Most points in another competition were won by Mrs Kemp, with Mrs Ballagh second. An amusing play, "His Wife's Mother." was presented by Mesclames C. L. Wilson, R. F. Pilkington and T. H. Bennett. It was decided to form a drama circle and to affiliate with the British Drama League. The hostesses were Mesdames J. A. Carr, W. Cordy and E. F. Davison, and Misses E. Patterson and T. Thoroughgood. CHEVIOT The monthly meeting of the Cheviot Women's Institute was held in the lounge room of the public hall recently. Mrs E. G. Wood presided over a fair attendance of members. Mesdames A. Williamson and R. McKnight were appointed delegates to attend the federation meeting to be held in Christchurch in May. Mrs L. H. Marshall (Cheviot) gave a lecture on early poets and the beginnings of literature. The competitions for the month were as follows: Bowl of grass, grain, and flowers, Mrs C. W. Dalgety 1, Mrs A.
Williamson 2; three local snapshots, Mrs G. L. Nell 1, Mrs F. Sargent 2, Mrs E. G. Wood 3; jar of raspberry jam, Mrs H. Marsden , Mrs A. Williamson 2, Mrs C. W. Dalgety 3. .Opportunity was taken during' the afternoon of presenting Mrs R. Bailey, who is leaving the district, with a silver spoon with the institute badge. The hostesses' competition (Girls' Names) was won by Mesdames G. L. Nell, F. Sargent, and R. McKnight, equal 1. The hostesses
for the afternoon were Mrs C. Ogden and Miss B. Morrison. SPOTSWOOI) The monthly meeting of the Spots- 1 wood Women's Institute was held in the Spotswood Hall recently. Mrs T. Stevenson presided over a fair attend-
ance of members and visitors from Parnassus. Interesting demonstrations on crystallising flowers for cake decortions and making pine needle baskets were given by Miss E. Goldsmith. Competitions for the month were won as follows: Vase of flowers, Mrs T. Stevenson 1, Mrs P. Fitzgibbon 2; knitted socks, Mrs H. S. McCully 1, Mrs A. W. Leamen 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames A. G. Harrison and E. A. Harrison and Miss D.
Harrison, whose competition was won by Miss D.. Wilkinson and Mrs B. Buttle.
