LAWN MOWERS AND BUTTER
BOR r HT,T! COUNCIL PTPCUSSES A PURCHASE Some dispute has arisen over what make the New Brighton Borough Council's new lawn mower should be. At the meeting of the council last night, some councillors held that it should be of British manufacture but Cr. J. K. Worrall maintained that in the light of the British public's apparent preference for Danish butter there was no reason why the council should adhere to the "all-British" policy in the buying of a new lawn mower for the borough. A motion was before the meeting cf the council last evening that tenders be called for a mower and the merits and country of origin of a machine which had been inspected were being discussed when Cr. Worrall suggested that the council might remove the stipulation that the mower must be of British make. "Great Britain has seen fit to purchase more Danish than New Zealand butter" he said, "and as Canada desires to buy more New Zealand butter and has opened a new market for the New Zealand product I think we would not be breaking faith with our so-called British tradition if we left out the stipulation that the machine must be of British make." "But Canada is British," declared Cr. J. S. Ainsworth. "Then again," continued Cr. Worrall, " we find that the United States has bought some of our wool. We should give equal consideration to machines from any of these countries." The council decided not to stipulate what make the mower should be, in its calling of tenders. The Mayor (Mr E. A. M. Leaver) said that the council could decide whether it would buy a British machine or not after it had received the '.tenders.
