FOR CRIPPLED CHILDREN
Noted Surgeon Offers Services MAYORS' SUPPORT OF SCHEME A.-S'TIATK'-: TfXEGRA.It.I AUCKLAND. March 11. The announcement that the wellknown plastic surgeon, Dr. H. P. Pickerill, had offered to place his services gratuitously at the disposal of the proposed organisation for crippled children was made by IVIr C. J. B. Norwood before his return to Wellington. Dr. Pickerill, who was formerly Director of the Dental School in the University of Otago, and who subsequently practised in Sydney, returned recently to reside in Wellington. I have received a letter from Dr. Pickerill," said Mr Norwood, "suggesting inclusion in the scope of the organisation of children suffering from cleft palates. He states that he is not sure the life disability of such children may not be as great as having a crippled foot. He is very jy.uch interested in these childien, r,nd to my knowledge has for many years been doing all lie can for them, With a great degree of success. He offers his nwn and his wife's services gratuitously to the organisation. -It will be very gratifying to Lord Nuffield," added Mr Norwood, "and, indeed, to all those who would have something done for the unfortunate crippled children, to know I have received complimentary letters from no fewer than 30 Mayors in all parts of New Zealand. They indicate their wish immediately to open mayoral funds to supplement Lord NufTield's splendid national gift. It is gratifying, too. that the orthopsedic surgeons of New Zealand are unanimously behind this work." NEW BRIGHTON COUNCIL TO OPEN LIST In accordance with the wish of Lord Nuffield, that all mayors should open funds to supplement his gift of £60,000 for crippled children, the New Brighton Borough Council decided at its meeting last evening to open a subscription list in New Brighton. "We are rather a poor borough, said the Mayor, Mr E. A. M. Leaver, "but. we ought to fall in line, and however small the amount we receive may be, it will be of valuable help." LIST AT SUMNER A subscription list for funds to Supplement Lord Nuffi.eld!s gift of £60,000 for the care of crippled children in New Zealand, is to be opened at Sumner. At the meeting of the borough council last evening, the Mayor, Mr W. H. Nicholson, said that he had been requested by Mr C. J. B. Norwood, to invite subscriptions to the fund. The council agreed that a list be opened and that residents be invited to send in subscriptions.
LYTTELTON TO ASSIST At the meeting of the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening the Mayor (Mr W. T. Lester) announced that, in response to a request from Mr C. J. B. Norwood he would open a subscription list to supplement the gilt of £60,000 made by Lord Nuffield for the care of crippled children.
