DESTRUCTIVE BUSH FIRE
FARMLAND SWEPT IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA ADELAIDE, March 11. Fifteen thousand acres of rich farmland in the Mount Gambier district were swept by one of the most destructive bush fires on record. At least two homes were destroyed, and sheep, pigs, and poultry perished in hundreds. Volunteers worked desperately to check the outbreak as it raged towards Mount Gambier on a three to four miles front. The flames reached within two miles of the town before a change of wind carried them toward rougher country. Drizzling rain eventually assisted the fire-fighters, and the situation is being brought under control. It is estimated that the damage will be between £20,000 and £30,000.
