UNITED CLUB EVENTS CORICH BEATS CANT IN MEN'S CHAMPIONSHIP Ivan Corich, New Zealand junior champion in 1933-34, gave further proof of his ability on Saturday afternoon by beating A. E. Cant, one of the province's first four ranking players, in the third round of the United Club's championship, 6-4, 2-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1. Corich has improved steadily during the season, and he played one of his best games to date. He will now meet H. Dymond for the right to play C. Angas in the semi-final. Cant was runner-up in the championship last year. „ . . , One of the best features of Corich s play is his ability to play defensively until the right moment comes for attack. He presented an impenetrable defence to Cant's driving attack, and when the latter attempted to end the rallies by coming to the net the younger player exploited his opponent s overhead weakness by deep lobbing. In the fourth and fifth sets Corich drove to the corners with great accuracy, but he was helped by his opponent breaking down frequently on easy shots. Other third-round matches resulted:—H. Dymond beat J. H. W. Sheppard, 6-0, 6-4, 3-6, 6-0; W. R. Robinson beat E. E. England, 6-2, 6-0, 6-4- C. F. Penfold beat M. McGillivray. G-3.' 6-4, 6-4. In the women's singles Miss E. Rudkin. who has been first ranked player in Canterbury for the greater part of this year, was beaten in the first round by Miss Irine Poole, third on the Canterbury ranking list, 6-3, 6-4. Miss Rudkin has not been at her best m the last few months, and she made too many mistakes against a player who defended tenaciously and took advantage of all the openings her opponent gave her. In the semi-final Miss Thelma Poole, who recently displaced Miss Rudkin from first place on the ranking list, beat Miss B. Gould. 7-5, 6-0, in a colourless match. Neither plaver was at her best. Other matches played recently resulted:— , j Men's doubles championship—.Second round: Angas and Dymond beat Bell and Skellerup, 6-0, 6-4, 6-3; Conch and Penfold beat Patterson and Walker, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, 8-6.
