LIFE-SAVING

CHAMPIONSHIPS AT NORTH BEACH SEVERAL CUPS AWARDED The North Bench Club's annual competitions for the J. Shaw, Sir J. G. Ward, B. B. Wood, and D. V. Wilson Challenge Cups, ulso tho club's bellman's championship, were held yesterday. The interest displayed in nil events was keen, and the finishes wore close. A feature of the competitions was the efficiency in tho work of junior members. The weather und sea conditions were good, but for tho last two events the sea became rather choppy, and a fairly strong easterly wind sprang up. During tho afternoon a visit was paid to the club by Messrs Jean Taris and Emile Poussard, the French swimmers. They were accompanied by Mr V. G. Spiller and Miss D. Brown, of the Canterbury Swimming Centre, Mr W. CarltOD, of the South Canterbury Swimming Association, and Mr O. Bryant, manager of the French team. Mr D. V. Wilson, in presenting the cups to tho winners, congratulated them on their good performances. He congratulated the junior members on the keen interest they were taking in surf club work. He also thanked the visitors for their attendance and their interest in the work of Burf life-saving. The judges for all events were Messrs D. V. Wilson, K. Herriott, and L. Sutherland, and the timekeepers were Messrs T. Dalton and C. C. Kemp. The results were:— SHAW CUP HANDICAP BACK, ROUND THE BUOY. JUNIOR EVENT. R. Rimmer (scr) . . 1 R. Hatchwell (7sec) . . 2 R. There were 14 competitors in this race, all being less than 16 years of age. Rimmer was on scratch, and conceded up to 35 seconds to others. He was first round the buoy, and maintained this lead the rest of the way.
