Capable of being towed by an aeroplane at a speed of 200 miles an hour, a new type of aerial target has been developed in the United States for gunnery practice. The new target is of sleeve construction, with a series of smaller sleeves honeycombed inside the larger. The rear end is partly closed by a draw string, and in this way nearly all resistance except frictional drag of the fabric is eliminated. It is inflated by the slipstream of the propeller and as many as 10 targets can be carried in the rear cockpit of a towing aeroplane. The. targets are towed behind the aeroplane at a distance of from (JOO feet to a half mile and when one is Jiit it is reeled in and another reeled out to replace it.
