A master speedometer has been produced to check the accuracy of dashboard speedometers on cars. It is operated by jacking up a rear wheel and holding the speedometer wheel in contact with the centre of the rotating tyre. The road speed, of the tyre, is shown in miles an hour on the fourinch dial. One man operates the speedometer and another watches the dash instrument, the readings being compared. The size of the tyre has no effect on the accuracy of the test as the instrument is based on the principle that to check a dashboard speedometer, its indicated speed should be compared with the surface speed of the tyres.
