SWIMMING
«, TO-NIGHT'S CARNIVAL VISIT OF FRENCH ('IIA.MIMONS To-night at the Tepid Baths the Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association will conduct an international swimming carnival on the occasion of the appearance of the French champions, Taris and Poussard. Taris, who is the middle distance champion of Europe, has held five world's records, and finished second to Crabbe, of the United States, at the last Olympic Games. He has been putting up remarkable times in the North Island, and last Monday at Auckland he covered the quarter mile in 4min 49 2-ssee. This is the first time in New Zealand that anyone has covered the quarter mile in less than live minutes. On Wednesday night at New Plymouth, in a cold water bath, his time was only live seconds slower than hit Auckland effort. His style is said to be unorthodox, and great interest attaches to his appearance to-night. Poussard, who has created a sensation in the North Island, is the champion diver of all Europe. Last season he competed in 19 European diving championships, of which he won 17. On both occasions when he met A. Tickle in Australia recently, he defeated him decisively. Tickle's perTiclay 'J. .1.
