likely nt the distance but she weakened' a trifle just near the end. The Principal Event After being in the rear most of the way in the Storey Memorial Handicap, Chief Marionette finished attractively to defeat the each-way-favour-ite, Knight of Australia, who was runner-up in the race for the second year in succession. Sinking Fund led from Mungatoon and Matorni, but Knight of Australia was taken to the front with about a mile to go. Knight of Australia continued to make the running, and led into the straight from Aga Khan, Sinking Fund, Star Artist, and Prince Colossus, with Chief Marionette moving up. Chief Marionette overhauled the leader inside the distance, to beat him by a length Prince Colossus was half a length away third, and Sinking Fund was fourth, ahead of Aga Khan and Matorni. Broughton's horsemanship was a factor in the success of Chief Marionette, who finished attractively. Knight of Australia wps not well ridden, otherwise he would have made it extremelv difficult for the winner. Prince Colossus ran his u-ual honest race. Agn Khan looked likely entering the straight, but weakened in the last furlong. Mungatoon ran badly A fioosl Performance The favourite, Gipsy Moth, recorded a nice performance to win the Linley Hack Handicap, with 9st 91b. Gipsy Moth and Astarth were always the leaders, and Gipsy Moth stayed on too solidly for the filly, having an advantage throughout the last furlong, to eventually win by a length. Adalene remained in third position throughout, and was a length and a half away. Tin Lap was fourth, followed by Prince Acre and Phiakuo. Miss Lorraine lost her rider in the straight. Adalene may be improved by the race. King Brierly and Keith Lu showed up on the outside of the leading bunch at the home turn, but failed to run on. A Decisive Win The win favourite, King Rey, scored very decisively in the Puketaia High Weight Handicap. King Rey w-as in the rear with Alloy at the end of the first furlong, but ran up behind the pacemaker, Ford Acre, near the half mile. Once the straight was reached King Rey assumed command, and went on to win by a length and a half from King Mestor, who came home fairly well, after being quietly ridden in behind. Alloy finished third, and Ford Acre was fourth. King Rey. was kept up to his work at the finish, as he showed a tendency to loaf when he reached the front in the straight. A Surprise Success Coronis was responsible for a mild surprise in winning the President's Handicap, for which Star Artist was favourite. Tai Ao, Coronis, and Star Artist were quickest to begin, but with a little over a furlong covered, . Lucidus and Sirona rushed to the ; front. Lucidus and Sirona were the leaders into the straight from Coronis , and Greek Gold, with Tai Ao, British Columbia, and Star Artist in a bunch on the outside. In a wonderful race i home. Coronis won bv half a head from Lucidus, who tired only in the last few strides. Tai Ao was another half head away third, with Star Artist almost in line fourth. Then close up followed Greek Gold and British Columbia. The first_ five horses : all had winning chances in the last ; furlong, ruid it was an exciting finish. Star Artist appeared just a shade un- | lucky, j Rider's Third Win W. J. Broughton scored his third win of the day when he piloted Nun Nicer to victory in the Beereseourt Hack Handicap. Nun Nicer followed ' | Lionheart and Lap Up into the I straight and s"/'endidlv handled, won j bv three parts of a length from Gay ! Kme. who defeated Lap Up by a snni- ! i.jj' margin Enge was fourth, foli lowed bv Merry Lap and Lionheart. 1 li looked as if Nun Nicer would be I when Oav Rose, who was last of the way, ('ashed up with n : ' b.-iMiaot hurst on the outside inside ,Me di - tance However Gay Rose was ' 1 not (mile able to withstand the run. ,! and Mun Nicer drew away in the last j | f.-v .-'rides, PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY I | .-.rr.riAi to tbe rßn=.<o ; ' AUCKLAND.
