RACING STABLES DESTROYED
* THREE YOUNG HORSES BURNED c. MORSE LOSES HEAVILY i (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND. March 10. Three young thoroughbred racing horses, valued at about £IOOO, were burned to death when the racing i stables of Cuthbert Morse, trainer, of Takanini, were destroyed by fire late on Saturday night. The loss on the buildings, racing equipment, and feed is estimated at £BSO. None of the loss is covered by insurance. The outbreak was discovered about 10.30 p.m., when Morse's son was roused from sleep by the sound of horses stamping and kicking in the stables. He rushed outside to find the stables almost enveloped in flames. The three horses were in lose-boxes in the centre of the stables. Morse, jun., and neighbours made repeated attempts to reach the horses, but the doorway and walls of the building were enveloped in flames. When it was obvious that the animals were doomed, efforts were concentrated on saving the adjoining outbuildings and preventing the flames from reaching the house. A motorcar was saved from the garage adjoining the stables, and a small oneroom bach was also saved. Morse, the owner, was at; Te Hapa with two horses. Me said lie would lose heavily, as none of the building or valuable racing equipment was insured. One of the rJc.slro.yerl horses, the two-year-old colt Springfield, raced by Miss 11. Walker, of Auckland, had been entered to race at Pacroa next Saturday. It was valued at about £SOO. "The other two horses were Rimu Rose, a two-year-old filly owned by S. The cause of the fire is unknown, but all doors and windows were found securely fastened on the arrival of the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade in answer to a call from the Jervois street call box. The fire had secured a good hold, and it was only the arrival of the brigade and a 'good supply of water which prevented the total destruction of the building. It was jointly owned by Miss A. M. Russell and Miss V. Croft. At the time of the lire the owners, who also occupy the property, were absent. The hnu.se and furiiture are insured for £450 with the Phoenix Insurance Company.
