HINDUS AND CHILD MARRIAGES
❖ "SPINSTERS" AGED II LONDON, March 8. The Bombay correspondent of the "Daily Mail" says that the imposition of a tax on all "spinsters" over 11 years of age is the latest proposal of the orthodox Hindus at Ahmedabad in order to defeat the British Government's Sarda Act, which forbids girls marrying under the age of 14. The orthodox Hindus insist that it is essential according to Hinduism for marriage at the earliest age. They accordingly are trying to enforce the marriages of girls between the ages of nine and 11, by penalising their parents to the extent of one rupee for every month that the daughter is unmarried after 11 years.
