MONICA PARK SPEEDWAY

LAST APPEARANCE OF OVERSEA RIDERS At Monica Park to-night speedway patrons will have the last opportunity this season of seeing overseas broadsiding stars, for the season will close with a charity meeting next Saturday. To-night, two famous English riders, "Tiger" Stevenson and Arthur Atkinson, and the well-known Australian star, Billy Lamont, will make their only appearance in Christchurch this season. The meeting will also be notable as the last occasion on which Jack Hobson will ride here before leaving for Wembley Stadium. Hobson's engagement by the management of the famous Wembley track caused quite a sensation, and to-night he will be out to show that he deserves the chance which Van Praag secured for him overseas. "Tiger" Stevenson's appearance is of special interest in Christchurch, as hi- has relatives here. Stevenson's name is known on all the leading speedways of the world, and his reputation in England may be judged by the fact that he has been captain of his home team, West Ham, for six years. He has also captained England in tests for four years, and he comes from Sydney this season with four track records to his credit. Arthur Atkinson is Stevenson's riding companion, and at 21 years of age he has already justified his place in the English test team, and has been hailed by experts as a coming champion. Billy Lamont is a spectacular rider, who has beaten the world's best, at one time or another, in Australia, Europe, and America, and has held the world's championship. Only last year he made a tour of the United States, and was victorious wherever he went. It is easy to get second grade riders for New Zealand, but very hard to get the real stars of the speedway, and the appearance at Monica Park to-night of these three is a chance which should not be missed.
