♦ GREYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL (special to the tress.l GREYMOUTH, March 8. During the month of February, 1935. 11 building permits, of a total value of £2245, were issued by the Greymouth Borough Council. Employees under the No. 5 scheme in the borough of Greymouth at present total 104, a decrease of three compared with the numbers at the end of January. The Greymouth Municipal Library last month issued a total of 2264 books. Thirty-six members' tickets were issued, and 25 new books were also placed on the shelves. Scrub Fire The petrol stores, on Omoto road, just above the Cobdcn bridge, were menaced by a scrub fire on the hill on Wednesday night. The fire brigade was called out, but the plug was too far away for the hose to be used. Two firemen were ]eft on guard to prevent the flames approaching too close to the stores, but the spread of the lire changed to another direction. Timber Exports The exports of timber from Greymouth to Australia arc being well maintained, and this week's total will be almost 2,000.000 feet. The Mernoo is loading about 1,000,000 feet, mostly red pine, for Melbourne, while the Omana is loading 800,000 feet, equally distributed between red and white pine, for Melbourne and Adelaide. During the last' five or six weeks there has been a falling off in the export of timber to Canterbury. Amateur Athletics At a meeting of the Greymouth Amateur Athletic Club, at which Mr J. Guy presided, the Westporl Club wrote requesting hominations for the Mahcr Cup tournament, on March 16. It was decided that, as the club was not yet firmly enough established, entry for the events be postponed until next senson. It was decided that a sports meeting on a large scale be held on March 30, and that teams from Canterbury and Westporl be invited to compete. Personal Mr E. S. Brittenden. district, railway traffic; manager, is visiting the West Coast. The Rev. Father D. Mifligan. S.M., left yesterday on return to Wellington. Mr R. Stevenson, of the Union Bank, Greymouth, left yesterday for Christchureh on annual leave. Mr A. Hopgood left yesterday for Invercargill. Miss M. Forman and Miss K. Hallins left yesterday on return to Christchurch. Women's Cricket The first women's crickel match of the West Coast season was played on the Recreation Ground, between Cobden and Reefton teams. Cobdcn won on the first innings by 21 runs. The captain, Miss M. Kelly, scored 44 not out in their first innings, and look eight wickets for 32 runs. Cobckn batted first, and scored 106. Reefton ' replied with 82. In their second innings, Cobdcn declared with 57 for eight wickets, leaving Reefton half an hour to get 82. At stumps, Reefton had scored 68 for the loss of two wickets, Mrs Eklund making 44 not out.
