SUMNER ITEMS
TREES IN THE BOROUGH With the advent of colder weather the danger to the many trees growing on Scarborough and Clifton, due to fire is decreasing every week. Tho potential fire danger has never been greater than during the last two or three months, and fortunately the fires that have occurred have not endangered any of the trees. The majority of trees on the hills have come through the dry spell very well, and are now well established. Those planted on the Esplanade near Scarborough are also growing very well. Tennis The majority of club matches are nearing the final stages and in one competition—the women's championship singles—the title has already been decided. Resuls of recent matches are as follows: Men's Handicap Singles—Semi-final; A. E. Hewston (owe 40) beat I. J. Wilson (owe 3/6 15), 9-3. Women's Handicap Singles—Semifinal: Mrs Brooke (owe 15 3/6) beat Miss Whitfield (received 3/6 15), 9-7. Rugby Football The annual report to be submitted at the Sumner Rugby Football Club's annual meeting on March 14, states that during last season the club was represented by one team in the ■ Canterbury Rugby Union's competitions. This was the sixth grade team which finished well up in the competition, and which reflected much credit on the coach, Mr R. Noonan. The financial position of the club is sound. Bowls In the final of the championship singles of the Sumner Bowling Club, T. F. Chambers beat C. N. Forrest, after a very exciting finish. Chambers was three down and drew four shots to win by a point. In the final of the rinks championship, W. J. Hampton beat J. F. Menzies after a close game. In the handicap doubles, Longuet and Caesar 5 beat Stevens and Newburgh 5. The draw for the fourth round of the handicap singles is as follows:—Chambers (2) plays Thomas (2), Graham (2) plays Peek or Johnston (1), Stevens (1) plays Buxton (1). Cheshire (1) plays Newburgh (1). The annual inter-borough match against New Brighton will be held this afternoon at Sumner. Winter Sports The various winter sports bodies in the borough are showing signs of activity. The Richmond Hill Golf Club has already had its annual meeting and fixed its opening day for March 23. The Association Football Club will meet shortly and the Rugby club will hold its annual meeting next Thursday. The Redcliffs Women's Hockey Club has fixed the date of the annual meeting for March 18. The Redcliffs Men's Club has not yet decided on the date of the meeting, which will be held towards the end of the month. Community Drama Club The Sumner Community Drama Club held the first meeting of the new season in the Presbyterian schoolroom this week. There was a good attendance of members, and two plays were read. The secretary, Mr L. Boot, said that the prospects for the season were very promisirfg. It was decided to cancel next wee's meeting and to hold the annual meeting on Tuesday, March 19.
