three-mile Wellington championship and the one and three miles events at Christchurch was running in the bunch, with M. Chalk, A. H. Wayman (Otago), and M. Cooke a little further back. Cooper held a small lead, on Allen at the bell. The pace increased 300 yards from home, when Forne sprinted. Allen passed Cooper and the three entered the straight almost together, with Forne - moving away. Allen sprinted very fast over the last 30 yards, but the Hawke's Bay man sustained a brilliant pace to win by 11 yard. Exciting Pole-Vault It is some years since the pole-vault produced such high-class competition and it fell to two Canterbury men to decide the issue. Working up to more than 10 feet, M. W. Mulvey and F. S. Barraclough (Canterbury), R. O. Johnston (Otago), and R. Callinan commenced a thrilling elimination match. The southern men worked up to 10 feet 9in and eliminated Callinan and Johnson, who failed at that height. Eleven feet was reached by Barraclough and Mulvey, and when both men were looking for records, the latter failed in the next height. Barraclough then went on to lift 3in amid enthusiasm, but failed In an attempt at lift 6in, a jump which, had the attempt been successful, would have passed the New Zealand record by one and a half inches. Auckland have produced a worthy successor to A. Elliot in W. S. Bainbridge, who proved too strong for W. J. Fitzsimmons, the Wellington cfiam- j pion. With G. Quinn (Hawke's BayPoverty Bay), who won his heat in brilliant fashion against S. A. Black, Bainbridge, Fitzsimmons, and Quinn, there is talent for a brilliant final. The 440 yards heats provided good competition. C. Evans, the. former Olympic Games runner went well to beat A. Kerr, another fast Aucklander. Bainbridge scored brilliantly against Black in his heat, going 3-ssec outside Broadway's time last year. Wellington, with W. J. Fitzsimmons and C. Robinson, gained second places. In the 100 yards heats, the brilliant Canterbury sprinter, J. B. MacFarlane won his heat in a great fight with Bainbridge. MacFarlane appears to have a superior finish. To-morrow's programme will be begun with a grand parade of athletes. OLYMPIC TEAM t ; PEUIOI) OF TRAINING IN BERLIN PRESS ASSOCIATION' TELEti KAM .) WANGANUI, March 8. "Pressure should be brought to bear right away to enable whatever New Zealand athletic team is chosen for the Olympic Games to obtain a full period of training in Berlin," said Mr Norman McKenzie, representing the Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay Centre, at the annual conference of New Zealand amateur athletic centre delegates here to-night. Mr L. A. Tracy, honorary secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, asked: "What would you call a full period?" Mr McKenzie: At least seven weeks. Mr R. O. Johnson (Otago) supported Mr McKenzie, and said it was impossible for a New Zealand team to reach top form in two or three weeks after landing. If trials were to be held to select a team, they should be fixed j early in the season. 1 i l | OTAGO-CANTERBURY | MEETING i j FIXTURE ABANDONED j ! Because of the inability of the j | Otago Amateur Athletic Centre to j j send sullicient athletes to Christchurch j the Canterbury v. Otago meeting I which was to have been held next i Tuesday evening has been abandoned. The Canterbury-Wellington fixture, which was to have been held earlier in the season, has also been abandoned, and the Canterbury Centre has been left this season without an intcrprovincial fixture other than the national championships.
