| RANGIORA PERSONAL Mr M. C. Ormandy, a member of the Rangiora County Council, • who has been absent from meetings since June of last year because of ill-health, was welcomed back to the council yesterday by the chairman (Mr W. Stalker). Mr W. B. Sprackett, who has been manager of the Rangiora branch of R. Hannah and Company-, Ltd., for the last nine months, has relinquished his position and will leave shortly lor Nelson. . ~ The Rev. T. Coalsworth, of tho Rangiora Methodist Church, returned last evening from Dunedin, where he attended the Methodist Conference. Flanders Poppies About. 150 poppies have been forwarded to Mrs H. Tallott, of Cust, for distribution in the Cust district, by the secretary of the Rangiora branch ot the Returned Soldiers' Association (Mi F. Hunt). The distribution will be part of the annual Poppy Day appeal to be made in Rangiora at the end of the month. Unemployment Figures The decision of the Unemployment Board to place all physically fit relief workers, who formerly had been employed on the No. 5 scheme, on the Ashlev river protection works is responsible for the increase in the number of men who next week will be available for river work, and for the decrease in the number of men who will be employed on the i:o. ij scheme. The majority of the local bodies in the district will be affected, as practically all had been employing some relief labour under the scheme. Next week the number of men on the Ashlev river job will be 133. compared with 95 this week, while on the No. 5 scheme tho respective totals are 51 and 68. The four men carrying out fireblight inspection will be kept on that work. Rangiora Pictures A gipsy picture with a big cast heads the programme at the Rangiora Town Hall this afternoon and to-night. "Caravan" is a story of Hungary, and the picture is spectacular and stirring in its musical rhythm. Charles Boyer, Loretta Young, and Jean Parker play the leading roles. HANMER SPRINGS The monthly meeting of the Hanmer Springs Golf Committee was held this week. Mr J. L. Hay occupied the chair. The treasurer reported that green fees for the last three months showed a slight deciease, compared with the fees for the corresponding period last year, but the club was in a very sound financial position. Four new members were elected, and one resignation was icceived Miss E. Parsons ofLertid two trophies for competition amongst women members. It was decided to thank Miss Parsons, and place on record the appreciation of the committee for the interest taken by nei. in the welfare of the club. Arrangements for the Simes and Bascand Cup Tournament and the dance to be held on the night of March 30, when the cups will be presented, were completed. CHEVIOT j The annual meeting of the Cheviot ! Golf Club was held in the Cheviot hall recently, the president, Mr G. R. Macdonald, presiding over a good attendance. The annual report stated that the club had had a successful season. The competitions held had been keenly contested and visiting players had passed favourable comment on the links. The balance-sheet which showed the cash assets of the club at £2B, was adopted. Officers for the coming season were elected as follows: —Patrons, the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, Messrs N. D. Campbell, and D. McLaren; president, Mr G. R. Macdonald; vice-presi-dents, Messrs A. C. Fuller, A. Gillanders, R. G. Westenra, and G. L. Rutherford; committee, Dr. L. H. Marshall, Messrs J. D. Fleming, S. Denton, T. Edridge, and W. G. Dickson; club captain, Mr R. G. Westenra; vicecaptain, Dr. L. H. Marshall; secretary and treasurer, Mr F. D. Childs; auditor, Mr E. Marshall; women's manager, Mrs C. S. Gordon; women's captain, Mrs A. Gillanders; women's secretary, Mrs F. Childs; women's committee, Mrs L. H. Marshall and Mrs England; green committee, Messrs R. G. Westenra, A. C. Fuller, S. Denton, and Mrs Gillanders; handicap committee, president, captain, and secretary. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr D. McLaren, for the use of his grounds, and to the donors of trophies and prizes. SEFTON The annual meeting of the Sefton Returned Soldiers' Women's Auxiliary was held on Thursday. There was a good attendance. Mrs A. M. Dalzell was unanimously re-elected president, and Mrs A. Ashworth honorary secretary. It was decided to canvas the district as usual on Poppy Day. TAI TAPU A meeting of the members of the Presbyterian Church was held in the Tai Tapu Hali, when Mr H. J. Macartney presided over a large attendance. It was decided to hold the annual chrysanthemum show on Thursday, May 9, and to ask the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, M.L.C., to open it. Mr H. J. Macartney was elected chairman of the show committee, Mrs Jas. Michael honorary secretary, and Mr A. K. Wilson steward of the show. The following were appointed to take charge of the stalls: Afternoon tea. Mis A. K. Wilson and helpers; produce, Mrs A. Tanner and helpers; outside produce, Messrs J. Wood and J. Bowden; competitions, Mr A. Thompson, sweets stall. Miss Jessie Wood and helpers. The members of the Tai TapuGreenpark branch of the Farmers' Union met in the Tai Tapu Hall, when Mr J. G. Fiecken presided over a large attendance of members. There were present at a meeting of the Kimberley School Committee; Messrs C. Bilbrough (chairman), F. Herbert, A. A. Stott, R. A. Boulton, and J. Steele. The chairman reported that the repairs and the cleaning of the concrete tank had been carried out, and it was decided to have the inside walls white-washed at an early date. The master (Mr F. A. Gartery is spending a few i days with Mr and Mrs E. Clark, Christchurch.

GREENDALE To honour Miss Adela Havill, whose marriage is to take place shortly, the members of the Greendale branch of the Women's Institute met last Thursday afternoon, at the residence of Mrs G. H. Ridgen. The afternoon was spent in croquet and tennis. Afternoon tea was served in the dining-room, which was prettily decorated. Miss Betty Adams sang a song, and Mrs S. Worsfold gave a recitation. Mrs Early, president of the institute, in presenting Miss Havill with a silver teapot, referred to the keen interest she had always taken in the meeting, especially the competitions, and wished her every success and happiness in her future life. HORORATA At the euchre party held in the pavilion in aid of the Tennis Club's funds the prize-winners were Miss Edith Thorne and Miss Quartermain and Mr S. Gibson and Mr N. Brown. There were present at a meeting of the Hororata Tennis Club Mr Cartwright (in the chair), Mrs Dalmer, Mrs Fleming, Miss McKenzic, Miss Quartermain, and Miss E. Gray (secretary), Messrs E. B. Dalmer, S. Gibson, W. Bell, P. Derrett. Mr W. Kellaway's tender for the construction of a new court was accepted, and it was decided to commence the work at once. It was agreed to continue the weekly euchre socials for the next five weeks. The first meeting of the year of the local branch of the Girls' Friendly Society was held in ne parish room on Thursday afternoon. The meetings from now on will be held fortnightly, when members will continue to sew and do other work for the St. Saviour's Orphanage. Mr and Mrs R. D. Gray and family left by car yesterday morning on a visit to the Waitaki hydro works. Mr and Mrs J. Ballagh and family and Mrs H. Ballagh are visiting relatives in North Canterbury. Miss Milne is visiting friends at Waikuku. DARFIELD The following will represent the Dartield Bowling Club in the match against the Imperial Club, to be played at Darfield to-day: Reveley, Jarman, McKay, Bushell is); Johnson, McLaughlin, Watson, Clarke (s); Hewitt, McMonagle, Westwood, Porteous (s); Hutcheon, Kennedy, Cullen, Robb (s).
