NEW ZEALAND'S CENTENARY
OBSERVANCE IN 1940 DISCUSSED AUCKLAND AND WELLINGTON CELEBRATIONS I [THE rUESS Rpocial Service.! AUCKLAND. .March 3. A .suggestion thai a committee should be set up in Auckland in the very near future to commence organising for the celebration of the centenary of New Zealand and of the city, which falls in 1940, was made by the Mayor (Mr G. W. Hutchison) to the City Council. Mr Hutchison said th.it in 1!»30 the council considered the 1910 centenary, and the Wellington City Council, which had discussed tentative proposals for (he holding of a New Zealand Centennial International Exhibition in Wellington, was communicated with. Subsequently a scheme for a celebration in Auckland was formulated in consultation with tile Akarana Maori Association and others, and a plan involving a programme of pageantry was endorsed. The Wellington City Council was again communicated with, and the suggestion was made tliat there should be co-opcration between the two cities to avoid overlapping, and to arrange joint action in regard to advertising abroad so as to attract visitors. No further progress hac! been made. He suggested that as a fund would be necessary to celebrate the occasion adequately, it was not too soon to set up a committee to commence the work of organisation, and in view o)' the approaching municipal elections lie proposed that it be recommended to the new council to give the mailer curly consideration. Mr A J.. Eiitrican moved the adoption of the Mayor's suggestion. He said Wellington's centenary fell on January '/.A and Auckland's a week later. It was necessary that something should be done to see that the celebrations in the two cities should dovetail. The motion was carried.
