STREET APPEAL
A HUMANITARIAN WORK it Among the social organisations in Christchurch, the Society for the Protection of Women and Children holds an honoured place. For nearly 30 years this society has carried on a beneficent work in the interests of women and children, who, for various reasons, have been glad to seek the advice and practical sympathy of this organisation. In a large city such as Christchurch all sorts of difficult situations arise, and those affecting the well-being of women and children are frequently brought under the care of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children. Obviously a great deal of the work of the society is of a delicate and confidential nature, and cannot be made public. For this reason the work of the society is not so widely known as it deserves to be. Those public officials such as* the city magistrates, who are brought into close touch with the work of the society, are unanimous in their commendation of the work, and the necessity for public support. The society is entirely dependent upon voluntary subscription, and ecah year an appeal is made to the public by means of a street day. This year this appeal will be made on Wednesday of next week, when it is hoped that the public will show their appreciation by a generous response. For some weeks past a hard-working committee has been planning the details for the street day, and although many collectors have offered their services, more are still wanted. Those who can help the society by acting as collectors next Wednesday ar§ asked to communicate with the society's office, 94 Gloucester street.
