NORTH CANTERBURY FEDERATION
A meeting of the executive com- j mittee of the North Canterbury Federation of the Women's Institute was held yesterday, whfen there were present Mesdames W. Deans (president, in the chair), B. L. Blunden, T. D. McDonald, Couch, Beattie, Ross Macdonald, Misses Warren, and E. M. Jacobson. The schedule for the exhibition and show to be held in the Art Gallery, Christchurch, on July 3 and 4, was read and adopted. Miss Colthart, Darfield, was appointed honorary auditor. The institutes in the North Canterbury Federation are being invited to hold an exhibition of work early in July. The special committee, with Mrs W. Deans as chairwoman, has drawn up a comprehensive schedule, even including a literary section. It is hoped in this way to have a very representative attendance of members with their exhibits. Every endeavour will be made to have an attractive show for the institute members cf North Canterbury. J MEDBURY At the monthly meeting of tlrj Med bury Women's Institute Mrs L>. Toshach 'president) occupied the chair. A competition for the best three jars of jam resulted:—Mrs 'j. Gmders and Mrs C. Earnshaw, equal 3, and Mrs 11. Brooker 3. A hearty vole of thanks was passed to Mrs Doak (president of Hawarden branch) who judged the competition. Mrs J. Gilbert gave a very interesting demonstration on passe-partout Avork. The next meeting will be held on March 27, when the annua] election of officers will take place. Good business was done at the sales table. The hostesses were Mrs A. Dalzell and Mrs H. Brooker. SCARGILL | [ At the February meeting of the ; Scargill Women's Institute there was a j large attendance, Mrs J. Preston pre- ! siding. An interesting letter was read from the institute's Scottish link, the Tarfside Women's Institute. Nominations were called for the election of officers and committee at the annual meeting, to take place this month. The afternoon's competitions were:—Best ] | knitted article. Mrs A. D. Fox 1, Mrs ; 11. Gallop 2; plate of pikelets, Mrs G. Mristowe 1. A competition arranged j by Mrs W. Brown (jumbled words, j from a grocery list), was won by Mrs G. A. Gi'eig. The hostesses were Mesdames E. Gardner, G. Garrett and G. A. Grcig. LOBURN A meeting of the Lobuni Women's Institute was held in the Coronation Hall, Mrs Macleod presiding over a good attendance. Three visitors from Ashley Bank' were welcomed. Nominations were received for officers for the ensuing year. The annual meeting will be hold in the school on Thursday. March 2fi. It was decided to hold a benefit dance on Saturday, March 23. The picnic was postponed until November. Mrs J. Wilkinson finished reading a diary written by Mrs A. E. Cook, "Hiking in Germany 30 years ago." The hostesses were Mesdames A. C. Pulley, Buckley, Crowe, and Miss A. Waters. AKAROA A very pleasant entertainment, promoted by the Akaroa branch of the Women's Institute was held at Mrs R. Bruce's home. A pageant, "Memo England," was presented, and there was a large audience, visitors being present from all over the Peninsula. The pageant was produced by Mesdames H. N. Wright and F. C. Newton, and Miss E. Keegan acted as accompanist. The principal parts were taken by Miss D. Leete, Miss Nancy Wright, Mrs R. D. Waller, Mrs F. C. Newton, Miss M. Armstrong, Miss A. Corbett, Mrs W. B. Ramsay, Mrs Tetterson, Misses Mcßride, Mrs H. N. Wright, Misses Seymour, S. Armstrong, M. Fyfe, and Noel Wright. Dances were given by high school girls. CHORLTON-LITTLE AKAI.OA BRANCH Mrs R. E. Waghorn presided at the February meeting of the ChorltonLittle Akaloa branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, held in the Chorlton Hall. There was a good attendance of members. The January meeting had been cancelled because of the busy season. Motions of sympathy were passed to Mrs W. Craw, who is a patient in St. George's Hospital, and to Mrs O. Gilbert, in the illness of her son. The flower show that was to have been held in March was postponed on account of the drought, only one class, that for a jam jar of flowers, being held. The secretary reported that 17s from the euchre party had been placed to the branch's account. Mrs R. Mason, Okain's Bay, who had promised to judge the lamp shades at the March meeting, is to be asked to demonstrate the making of grass stools. The prize for the plate of plain scones was won by Mrs W. Cunningham, with Mrs R. E. Waghorn second. Mesdames Roland Waghorn and William Cunningham were the hostesses.
