SO.MEKSKT TO I.OAI) The Federal lane .steamer Somerset, whivh sailed from Falmouth on February 8 in ballast for New Zealand, is due at Oarnaru on March 18 lo commence loading. She is to load at Lyttelton, Mari.it 2, r > to 27. and from this port will proceed to Timaru. HERTFORD FOR FINAL I.OADINC The Hertford is due at. L.ytlulloii on March 18 from Wanganui for final loading. She is to sail on March 21 for London, via Panama and Curacao. I'll l\ TEES The Te"j> arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning from the Chatham Islands with two passengers—Major G. F. Htilton and Mr M. li. Godby. The vessel is to dock at Lyttelton to-day, and is to sail on Saturday for the Chatham Islands. NEW 111 "HNS, I'll 1 Ll* EINEK The former Norddeutscher Lloyd motor-ship Merkur arrived at Sydney on February 23 from Bremen, and is to enter the passenger service between Australian ports and Singapore, under the ownership of Burns. Philp and Company, Ltd. The ship was purchased 'recently, with the Neptun, which is now trading to Hong Kong. Th Merkur is an attractive motorliner. of 594(5 tons, and, like her sister ship, has been designed specially for tropical service. She was built at Kiel in 15)24, for Norddeutscher Lloyd's Bremen-Mexico service, and was formerly known as the Rio Bravo. Accommodation is provided for about 90 first-class passengers in outside cabins, and for 24 third-class passengers. Deck space is extensive, and the public rooms are large and well ventilated. The Merkur, which left. Hamburg on December 29, under the command of Captain F. Poser, came out to Australia via the Cape. The German officers and crew who mtinned the liner are expected to return to their country from Sydney, and will be replaced by officers nncl men engaged by Burns, Philp. and Company. Ltd.
