ADDINGTON MARKET
A SOUND SALE
RECENT RATES MAINTAINED
CBT OCR COUMEBCItIi IBIIOM.J
Entries at Addington market yesterday were of average size. Generally there was a good sale. The fat cattle entry included a very small proportion of prime steers, and for this class there was a firming in prices. For the big mass of secondary steers and indifferent quality cows there was no change. The store sheep entry was of about the same size as last week, and the market showed little change. The good rates ruling at the Amberley ewe fair 011 Monday, after making allowance for the superiority there, were not maintained. In the store lamb section forward lambs and good ewe lambs sold at fully up to recent values, but station lambs were inclined to be easier. The demand for fat sheep was slightly better. They were decidedly brighter for big sheep over the early stages, but eased later. In the subsidiary sections of the market there was little change, although a better penning of store cattle attracted interest to that section. STORE LAMBS There was a slight falling off in the size of the store lamb yarding compared with recent sales, and the quality of the offering was very mixed. There were again a good many pens of small lambs, but the proportion of better class lambs Avas a little better than it has been of late. For the poorer quality bidding was not quite so keen, and several pens were passed. Values were about on a par with last week. The feature of the sale was a line of ewe lambs sent in from Birdling's Flat. They were an exceptionally even lot, the tops of which realised the good price of 225. The balance sold at from 18s 6d to 21s 3d. Values were:— Extra good ewe lambs to 225. Good ewe lambs 18s 6s to 21s 3d. Ordinary ewe lambs 15s to 16s. Inferior ewe lambs to 14s 9d. Good rape lambs 15s 6d to 17s. Medium rape lambs 13s to 15s. Wether lambs 10s 3d to 12s 2d. Ordinary wether lambs 9s to 10s. Cull lambs 6s 2d to 7s 9d.
The principal sales included:— Seventy-seven m.s. down cross at lis, 311 halfbred wether at 14s Id. 140 halfbred wether at 6s 2d, 90 m.s. halfbred at 9s 6d, 90 halfbred ewe at 6s Id, 91 three-quarterbred wether at 15s 3d, 89 three-quarterbred wether at 9s, 78 halfbred wether at 15s, 73 m.s. three-quarterbred at lis 6d, 30 halfbred wether at 13s 4d, 130 threequarterbred wether at 5s 9d, 100 halfbred wether at 10s 6d, 90 m.s. threequarterbred at 12s, 70 three-quarter-bred wether at 12s Id, 81 halfbred wether at 7s 10d, 85 halfbred ewe at 18s 6d, 96 down cross wether 15s lOd, 30 m.s. down cross at 13s, 56 halfbred ewe at 14s 9d, 70 halfbred wether at 7s 9d, 68 m.s. three-quarterbred at 17s, 140 down cross ewe at 12s, 140 down cross wether at 9s lid, 148 halfbred ewe at 225, 74 halfbred ewe at 21s, 42 m.s. halfbred at 14s 9d, 160 down cross wether at 14s, 71 m.s. three-quarterbred at 14s Id, 102 halfbred wether at 13s 9d, 156 halfbred wether at lis 2d, 107 halfbred ewe at 16s 9d. STORE SHEEP Ample evidence of the keen demand by farmers for breeding ewes was to be found in the store sheep sale.
which, considering the quality of the offering, sold satisfactorily. The yarding was quite as heavy as that of last week, but again old ewes predominated. The bulk of the offering came from the districts of North Canterbury, and many of the sheep showed signs of having travelled long distances. Included in the offering were several lines of two-tooths, but most of them were inclined to be on the small side. They met with fairly keen competition, however, and taking everything into consideration they sold very well. One line of 140 two-tooth Romney cross ewes, sent in from Pigeon Bay, made 30s 9d. For good sound-mouth ewes, of which there were not very many, there was a good demand, and recent prices were maintained. Very few pens of wethers were offered, and they were not very keenly sought after, the majority of them going to dealers.

FAT LAMBS The export schedule for fat lambs has been lowered a farthing during the week, the present rates being 7Jd for firsts and 63 d for seconds. In the case of lambs for city purposes the price scarcely receded to the extent of the revised schedule, and for export sorts the lower r'ate was maintained throughout. As at last, week's sale one of the leading export firms was not represented in the competition. The quality of the entry was very mixed with comparatively few drafts that did not show the effects of the dry season. The West Coast was again to the fore amongst the top prices. The best price of the day was 30s 4d for six of a line of 64 sent forward by McDonnell Brothers (Totara Flat), the average for the truck lot being' 28s Id. The entry was 3400 head, compared with 3600 last week. Values were: — Extra prime heavy Jambs to 30s 4d. Prime heavy lambs 23s 6d to 265. Medium weight prime lambs 20s 6cl to 235. Quality, however, was not so good, there being an undue proportion of inferior and old cows, and also a heavy leaven of unfinished steers. Although the proportion of prime steers was smaller than usual, those forward included a few pens of outstanding quality—the best, indeed, forward for some months. Two trucks of these came from the Te Kinga Land Company, on the West Coast. Eleven made the excellent average of £ll 14s sd, the best average for a long time. This sale was indicative of the market for really good beef. This was better than last week by about 2s per 1001b, the small amount of outstanding beef making up to 27s 6'd per 1001b in cases. However, the general run of medium cattle showed little change, and the mass of inferior stuff was inclined to be easier. A number of old cows failed to make the even 40s. In addition to the outstanding line already mentioned from the West Coast, a second excellently finished line came from Te Kinga, T. Robinson selling a truck lot of eight at an average of £ll 5s Bd. There were no outstanding cows and heifers in the entry.
