TARIS BREAKS 440 YARDS RECORD POUSSARD'S FINE DIVING (PRESS A.S3OCIA.TIOS TELEGRAM.^ HAMILTON, March 6. With the competition of the French champions, Jean Taris and Emile Poussard, adding zest to the programme, five South Auckland records were established and two New Zealand figures were broken at a swimming carnival under the auspices of the South Auckland Centre last evening. Taris, repeating his Auckland form, broke G. Bridson's 440 yards record of smin 13 2-ssec, which he reduced to smin 13sec. Billy Whareaitu, of Rotorua, set new national figures for the 50 yards backstroke, covering the distance in 29 4-ssec in a handicap event from scratch. Remarkable performances by a 12-year-old Maori girl Nawi Kera, set two new South Auckland records over the sprint distances. She took 33sec for the 50 yards and 44 l-ssec for 66 2-3 yards. D. H. Symes (Canterbury), the New Zealand title-holder, was easily beaten for second place in the furlong and 440 yards, won by Taris, by Riko Simmon, of Rotorua. Poussard gave an amazing exhibition of diving.
