MONOWAI'S FINE RECORD| i TItANS-TASMAN EXPRESS | An outstanding steaming performance has been achieved this summer by the Union Steam Ship Company's liner Monowai, which has established a reputation amongst trans-Tasman travellers for the remarkable regularity of her passages between New Zealand and Australia, says the "Dominion." During the 12 weeks from November 29 to her arrival at Wellington from Sydney via Auckland on February 21, the Monowai steamed a total distance of 23,125 miles, of which nearly 9000 miles was covered in one period of | four weeks. This remarkable performance included 12 crossings of the Tasman Sea between Wellington and Auckland and, Sydney, as well as six visits to Melbourne, most of this steaming being done at an average speed of about 18 knots. In addition to the regular passages to and from Australia, the Monowai also included in her 12 weeks' travelling two cruises from Auckland to Whangaroa. Russell, and Port Fitzroy (Great Barrier Island) and one from Wellington to Milford Sound and the Marlborough Sounds. On each occasion the cruises were made between Monday night and Friday morning of the weeks the ship called at Auckland and Wellington respectively. The Monowai. which is a ship of 10,850 tons gross register, during one period of the 12 weeks called at 19 ports before spending one night in harbour. On her arrival at Wellington on Monday afternoon from Sydney, the Monowai had steamed 25,605 miles dur- ; ing the 94 days since November 29, this I performance including 14 crossings of : the Tasman Sea as well as the three I cruises already mentioned.
