ELLESMERE COUNTY COUNCIL
There were present at the monthly meeting of the Ellesmere County Council held at Leeston on Monday, Councillors John Heslop (chairman), A. Quigley, R. T. McMillan, A. Anderson, and J. Nixon. Four property transfers were notified, the areas ranging from 50 to 186 acres. The clerk reported having forwarded to the Highways Board an estimated expenditure for 1935-36. A grant of £lO was made to the St. John Ambulance Association for the financial year 1935-36. Thirty hut owners at the Rakaia mouth petitioned the council to erect a cattle stop at the gate leading to the river bank. The clerk stated that the suggested cattle stop would not be legal. It was decided to reply that the use of cattle stops was illegal, and the engineer undertook to discuss the matter with some of the hut owners. The chairman and clerk were asked to represent the council at a meeting in Christchureh to discuss the allocation of heavy traffic license fees. The waterworks caretaker stated that there had been a fairly good supply of water in the races. The stock ranger reported that the roads had been fairly free from stray stock. It was agreed to have shingle placed on two recently-formed roads at Dunsandel. c The pay-sheet was £931 lis lOd and the bank balance £1299 17s 7d. Unemployment Committee Afterwards the council sat as the executive of the district unemployment committee, when a discussion about the provision of work took place with Ihe local certifying officer, Mr R. G. Forrester. At the end of last week, it was reported, the regis tr%tions had reached 52, and since then several more had been received. The Southbridge Town Board had written the commissioner stating that it was unable to provide work for the number of men in that part of the district In the meantime the men are to be employed at gorse clearing in reserves.
