GREYMOUTH SUPREME COURT (SPECIAL TO THIS PRESS.I GREYMOUTH, March 5. In the Supreme Court at Greymouth, yesterday, a motion for discharge in bankruptcy by Ernest Hunt Becker (Mr F. A. Kitchingham) was granted by Mr Justice Johnston. When the civil action. Grey County Council (Mr T. F. Brosnan) v. Grey Electric Power Board (Mr J. W. Hannan), a claim for £666 6s in rates, was called, Mr Brosnan made application for an adjournment until the next sitting, the question of costs and expenses for two witnesses for the defence to be reserved. Mr Hannan opposed the adjournment and applied for costs for two expert witnesses from Wellington. The adjournment until next sitting was granted, the question of reasonable expenses of defendant's witnesses to be settled by the Registrar. The question of all other costs was reserved. Personal Advice has been received from London that Mr E. C. Schnackenberg, B.Sc, of the engineering staff of the Public Works Department, Greymouth, passed the final examination of the Institution of Civil Engineers, and that the council of the institution has recommended him for election as an associate member. Mr and Mrs I. Bennington have returned from a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs M. J. Phillips have returned from a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs F. Garth have returned from a visit to Christchurch. In appreciation of his work as conductor of the Greymouth Municipal Band, Mr L. Francis was met by the members of the band, after the Timaru contest, and presented with a gold medal, suitably engraved. The presentation was made by the president, Mr J. S. Robertson, and several senior members also spoke. Mr Francis suitably replied. Trotting Meeting The Greymouth Trotting Club is applying for a two-day permit for a meeting to be held at the beginning of April. No definite dates have yet been suggested, but the programme will be on similar lines to the last October meeting. Tennis Several inter-club tennis matches were played over the week-end. At Greymouth. St. Columba defeated Moana by 18 sets and 129 games to 6 sets and 92 games. Moana won a match against Brunner, at Taylorville by 76 games to 71, the sets were even 8-all. At Blackball, the home team defeated Brunner by 71 'games and 9 sets to 66 games and 7 sets. t Borough Elections At the May elections Cr. A. McCarthy will again contest a seat on the Greymouth Borough Council and will also seek election to the Grey Electric Power Board. Dangerous Vandalism During the week-end a strand on each of the ropes suspending the staging on which men are working to repair the under-surlace of the Cobden bridge was cut away. One of the men noticed the ropes before going on to the staging and the ropes will now be examined each morning. School Committees ' The quarterly meeting of the executive of the West Coast School Committees Association was held in the Grey Main School. The resignation of the chairman, Mr R. A. Barrowman, was accepted with regret, and Mr R. R Smith (Taylorville) was appointed acting-chairman, until the annual meeting m May. It was decided that the Canterbury Education Board be asked that, if in the future any action, such as closing the schools for half-days because of the heat, be taken the school committees be notified directly Mr J. Menzies (Hokitika), an executive member of the Westland branch of the New Zealand Educational Institute, gave an address on the institute's pamphlet, "Order Out of Chaos " and was accorded a vote of thanks. New Sundial The sundial recently presented to the borough council by Mrs M J Lindop, Greymouth, will shortly be erected in front of the office wing of the Town Hall. When daylight saving is in force the total advancement on true time in Greymouth is approximately three-quarters of an hour, so that the dial will not correspond with a watch. Alterations to Railway Dam The railway dam, about a mile and a half back in the mountains from Otira, is being extended by one yard by 12 yards, and a rail is being placed along the top to keep out falling boulders, which have been coming in contact with the main feed pipe, which leads to the Otira power house. The men on the work are diverting the water into another channel, so that an inspection can be made of the main channel. Technical School Mr T. E. Coates presided over the monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Greymouth Technical High School. The finance committee's report showed the following cash balances:—School credit balance, £506 8s 2d; hostel debit balance, £195 10s 3d; balance at bank, £3lO 17s lid; accounts to be pasesd for payment, £2Ol 16s 4d. The report Vas adopted and the accounts were passed for payment. It was decided to forward a letter of congratulation to Mr L. Francis, a teacher at the school, on the success of the Municipal Band, of which he is conductor, at the Dominion contest. It was decided that it be a recommendation to the teachers to form a swimming club at the school next season. Messrs A. H. McKane and F. B. Lawn were appointed as the visiting committee for next month. The tender of Mr P. C. Thomson (£l6 4s 6d), which was the lowest, was accepted for the installing of electric light in the manual training room. The principal (Mr R. McLaren) reported that the roll number was 310, made up as follows: Boys 166, girls 144—senior school 108, second year pupils 103, first year pupils 99. A total of 106 pupils were in the general or professional course, 104 in the commercial course, 76 in the trades course, and 24 in the home science course. The numbers in the senior and middle school were exactly the same as last year, 211, but the number of first year entrants was slightly down. Cricket Association At the fortnightly meeting of the management committee of the West Coast Cricket Association, held last evening, Mr F. H. Denton presided. It was decided that games be arranged between the leading club in Greymouth and the leading club in the southern competition, and the winning teams in the Lake Brunner and Reefton Sub-Associations' competitions. It was decided to ask the Inangahua SubAssociation to play a match with Greymouth, at Greymouth, on March 17. Mr W. Barlow was appointed manager and Mr H. S. Nightingale captain of the following team to play Ashburton, at Ashburton, on March 16 and 18, in the recently instituted minor associations' competition:—O. J. Morris, N. Bayley, M. Marshall, J. Cornish (Marist), H. S. Nightingale, W. Rapley, W. E. C. Restieaux, G. Simmonds, J. Heasley (United), J. Guy, D. Knapp (Cobden). The points in various local competitions now are:—A division: Cobden 9, Marist 7, United 4, Runanga 2; B division: Kumara 14, Brunner 13, Cobden 8, Marist 7, Camerons 7. Cobden, Marist and Camerons still have to have their bye; Saturday competition: Technical 9, Cobden 6, United 6, Technichal Old Boys 5, Marist JU

REEFTON PERSONAL (SPECIAL TO THE PSESS.I REEFTON, March 5. Miss Garth has left on a visit to Wellington. Mrs Edlin (New Plymouth), who has been the guest of her sister, Mrs J. B. Stevenson, has left on return to the North Island. Rainfall The rainfall for the month of February, as recorded at the Reefton School of Mines, was B.Bin, falling on seven days, the maximum fall for one day was 3.65 in on February 20. Cricket Further matches in the Foster Cup competition resulted in Waratahs defeating Waiuta on the first innings. Reefton gained a three-point win over Ikamatua. Picnic The Reefton Rugby League Club entertained the members of their women's committee at a picnic at Maruia. The day. was beautifully fine and games were enjoyed till a late hour. Annual Show The following are the results of the baby show, conducted bv the Inangahua Agricultural and Pastoral Association:—Under 18 months, Peter Smith; under 12 months. Iris Bolitho; under six months, Betty Somerville. Special prize, Mrs G. J. Dick's twins. The competition for the lamb, at the show was won by Miss Joan Gebbie. Supreme Court An appeal by William James Morns, of Reefton, against the Warden'* decision in granting forfeiture of a special quartz claim at Merrijigs on the application of Colin Anson Gillett mining engineer, was dismissed in the Supreme Court to-day, before Mr Justice Johnston. A decree nisi divorce, was granted Emily Florence Absalom, of Reefton against Ellison Absalom on the grounds of three years' separation. The petitioner was granted interim custody of the five children. HOKITIKA MINING EXECUTIVE (SPECIAL 10 TBX IBBSS.I HOKITIKA, March 5. At the meeting of the Westland Mining Executive, it was reported that gold won for the fortnight "by subsidised miners amounted to 220z 13dwt. The amount had been affected by the loss of wash dirt through the flood. The supervisor reported that subsidised miners in the Stafford and Goldsborough areas had suffered losses of equipment and damage to tunnels and races. It was agreed that the men should be given as much assistance as possible. Life-saving The West Coast surf life-saving championship, which was to have been held at Hokitika on Sunday afternoon, was postponed owing to a very heavy sea and a strong drift. Not to disappoint a large gathering of spectators, two demonstration events were held. The Hokitika team, R. Cooper, M. Davidson, W. Craig, G. Delbridge, S. Diedrichs, E. Heenan, and B. Wyles won the seven-men event and the Greymouth team won the three-men alarm event. The championship event will be decided at Greymouth, probably on March 17.
