LEWIS PASS ROAD

POSITION DISCUSSED BY PRIME MINISTER (SPECIAL. TO THE I'UBSU.) REEFTON, March 5. Mr K. J. Holyoake, M.P., recently interviewed the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, emphasising the economic value of the completion of the Lewis Pass road, and has now received the following letter from Mr Forbes:—"With reference to your recent representations to me concerning the completion of the Lewis Pass Track road, I desire to say that I have gone into the matter with the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. J. Bitchener, and he advises me that he has made a close study of this particular proposal, but with all funds allocated there is nothing that can be done in the meantime, nor can a promise be made in the near future. My colleague, however, states that he will take the matter into consideration when making the distribution of available funds for the next financial year, and that if it appears that the more pressing access roading problems are capable of being disposed of without committing the whole amount for roading purposes, he will see if anything can be done to bring this proposal a step nearer accomplishment."
