BUTTER INSTEAD OF MARGARINE
BETTER DIET FOR CHILDREN PROPOSAL OF LONDON COUNTY COUNCIL [FROM OL'lt OWN COKKESrijNDCNT.I LONDON, February 2. Children and sick inmates in London public assistance homes and institutions will in future be served with butter instead of margarine, if the London County Council adopts a recommendation passed by its public assistance committee, whose report points out that at present margarine or dripping is served to adult inmates and children, except on two days a week, when butter is provided. The public assistance committee say it is following the lead given in this matter by the education committee, which has already decided that butter should be served at all meals to children in residential schools and homes under its control. The chang*. if approved, will come into effect on April 1. when the children will have butter for breakfast, tea, and supper. This will cost an additional £570 a year; but, taking into account the effect of amended dietaries which were adopted on January 1, the net increased cost will be £320 a year. The London County Council has already decided to set up five nutrition centres where, in appropriate cases, food concentrates will be provided for school children and parents advised on matters of nutriment. Although butter is so low in price, many of the public institutions in England still persist in saving a few pence by using margarine. From time to time the London represents-
