Orr Walker, district coroner, concerning the death of Herbert James Hobbs, a South African war veteran, aged 54, who died very suddenly at his home in Guise street on Sunday night. Sergeant Hill conducted the proceedings for the police. May Hobbs. daughter of the dead man. said that her father complained about a pain in the chest and shortly after he collapsed she sent for the doctor, who arrived a few minutes later. Dr. F. A. Scanncll stated that death had taken place a few minutes before he arrived. Hobbs had been ill for some time, but had not sought medical advice. Witness had made a postmortem examination, and in his opinion death was due to ante-mortem clotting of blood in the blood vessels that supply the heart.
