UNEMPLOYMENT
♦ MEETING OF WOMEN'S COMMITTEE The monthly meeting oi the Christchurch Women's Unemployment Committee was held last night, Mrs A. I. Fracr in the chair. It was decided to resume distribution of dinners from the training centre. The resignations from the committee of Miss Trent and Miss Sanders were received with regret, and appreciation of their services was put on record. The motion, of which notice had been given, that the Women's Auxiliary of the Manufacturers' Association could not be represented on the committee be rescinded was carried. It was agreed to ask the Unemployment Board to fix a definite rate of pay for those receiving relief in the centres. It was reported that two examinations had been held, and that the 12 girls examined had been successful. The sewing centre reported that it had made 138 garments for the Mayoress. 97 for the Metropolitan Relief Association, and 32 for the centre.
Gifts from Mrs Mountier and Miss Coventry were acknowledged. The advisory committee reported that satisfactory arrangements had been made with the Hospital Board whereby those on the register could receive treatment. Six women had received assistance for rent, 22 homes had bcv.n visited, and applications for clothing were received. The report of the girls' employment committee was adopted. Miss Graham was appointed to represent the general committee on the Girls' Employment Committee and their request that a representative from their committee be appointed to the general committee was granted.
MEETING AT NEW BRIGHTON Mr C. F. Pryke presided over a meeting of the New Brighton Unemployed Workers' Movement held in the Band Hall last night. There was an attendance of about &0, including a number of women. The chairman extended a welcome to Mrs R. Penny, of the 'women's branch of the Christchurch Workers' Association, and to Mrs E. McGowan. of the national executive of the Women Workers of Wellington. Mr G. Marsh, president of the New Brighton sub-branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, introduced Mrs E. Williams, J.P., of North Beach, and moved that it be a recommendation to the executive that she be included in the movement's list of nominees for the coming council election. It was announced that Mr O. C. White, of New Brighton, had agreed to act as co-trustee with Mr C. F. Pryke and that a Post Office Savings Bank account had been opened in their name. It was decided, on the motion of Mr Watkins, that the movement give its moral and financial support to the men on strike at Gore and that two members be authorised to collect a levy on pay day. It was decided to form a women's committee to act in conjunction with the executive. Mrs Ewings was appointed convener of a meeting to be held on Saturday.
