SMOKE NUISANCE IN CITY

❖ — MEASURES FOR ABATEMENT CONSIDERATION BY BEAUTIFY. ING ASSOCIATION The abatement of the smoke nuisance in the city was considered at a meeting of the Christchurch Beautifying Association last night, a complaint being made that the chimneys of two private firms in the north of the city and of the Christchurch Public Hospital were a source of annoyance to nearby residents. Reference was made to the proposal by an English firm to the Christchurch City Council to abate the nuisance from the council's destructor, and it was urged that the council should consider the acceptance of the offer as soon as possible. If the council took some progressive step, it was said, the Hospital Board and the private firms would probably follow suit.

The chairman, Mr R. B. Owen said there was no doubt that the chimney at the Christchurch Public Hospital and the chimneys of two private firms in the north of the city were great nuisances. He expected that members had seen the report in the newspapers which stated that the representative of an English firm had offered to do away. with the smoke nuisance from the City Council destructor chimney. The conditions were "No cure, no pay." If that could be done in other countries it could be done in New Zealand. The offer to do the work, which would cost a few hundred pounds, should be considered by the council as soon as possible. Mr Owen said he thought the association should see if the Hospital Board and the two private firms would do something to alleviate the nuisance. People in Park terrace, he said, were subjected to considerable inconvenience by the smoke from the chimneys of these two firms.

The Destructor Chimney In reply to a question, Mr Owen said that smoke from the destructor at the City Council yards was a real and a vile nuisance. "There is no question about that," he said. A member: It is very bad when the wind is from the east. Mr Owen: Yes; and when the wind is from the west the people on the east side of the chimney complain. Mr A. Peveriil said that if the association sent a resolution to the council some action might be taken. He thought the association should draw the attention of the private firms to the means available for preventing the nuisance. Mr H. L. Bowker: I think that if it is a 'success with the City Council the others will follow suit. It was decided to write to the council urging that early consideration be given to the abatement of the smoke nuisance.
