PREVENTION OF CRUELTY
SOCIETY'S WORK DURING FEBRUARY The committee of the Canterbury Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met, last evening. There were present: Messrs A. W. MacGillivray (in the chair). Mesdnnvos Millinglon and G. J. Smith, Miss Florence Jones, Messrs C. G. McKellar, F. A. Biggs, Robert Wilson, H. P. Bridge, H. F. Herbert, L. J. Taylor, and J. OJamieson. The society's inspector. Mr D. V. White, reported that he had inspected horse and poultry saleyards and attended two race meetings during the month. Visits had been paid to the city abattoir at. Sockburn for inspection of stock, to a number of freezing works, and to many small centres near the city. Seventeen cautions had been issued, most of them in cases of illtreatment of horses by working in harness animals with sores and by underfeeding. Court Cases Pending Several allegations of cruelty had been investigated, and two court cases were pending, one in which a farmer was charged with working in harness a black mare suffering from sore shoulders, and the other in which two heifers had been tethered together with a heavy chain, An Alsatian dog. alleged to be kept continually on the chain, had been found to be free and in good health. At night Ihe dog was kept in an enclosure, nine feet by seven feet, in which there was a kennel. It was exercised every evening. Other cases of alleged cruelty to dogs had been investigated and" had not been substantiated. The organiser of the Junior League. Mrs Millington. reported that lectures had been given in several schools during the month, and that literature dealing with the work of the society had been circulated. i
