CYCLING
♦ NEW ZEALAND FEDERATION MEETS The New Zealand Cycling Federation met last evening, Mr J. Sturrock presiding. A letter to the Northern Athletic Union explaining the benefits of affiliation with the New Zealand Federation was approved. A letter to the Union Cycliste Internationale asking for an alteration in the date of the federation's licenses from December 31 to September 30 in each year was approved. Discussion on the status of novice cyclists was deferred. Approval of the holding of the New Zealand amateur championships at Petone on March 23 was given. Mr H. S. Webber was approved as referee. It was decided to send the congratulations of the federation to H. Opperman on his winning the Bidlake Memorial Prize. A petition signed by a number of amateur cycling officials asking the: New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association for the immediate withdrawal of Mr J. Sturrock, one of its delegates, from the federation, was sent forward by the New Zealand Cycling Council. One of the signatories was Mr G. R. Giles, who is also an amateur association member of the federation. The grounds alleged were that Mr Sturrock had not the confidence of the cyclists of Canterbury, and also had not co-operated with his co-dele-gates. Mr Sturrock said that as Mr Giles was not present, he could not say anything about the petition except that he would like it to be given the fullest publicity. The complaints were unwarranted, and had certainly not been mentioned by Mr Giles at any of. the previous meetings. Mr J. M. Coffey and Mr G. Han cox said that they had seen no sign of lack of co-operation, and on the motion of Mr Coffey the federation expressed its confidence in Mr Sturrock. There
had been no complaint of lack of cooperation from his fellow delegates, and Mr Sturrock had done his best for cycling generally. The letter will be sent to the New Zealand Cycling Council.
