Jeffrey, general manager and engineer of the Hume Pine Company and of Hume Steel Ltd Auckland, will leave at the end of March on a 10 months' visit to Great Britain and the Continent. He will be accompanied by Mrs Jeffrey. • M Z S eorge Ellwood > well known m Wellington as a leading 'cellist has returned from an extended visit to Britain and the Continent and is in Wellington. Mrs Ellwood is still m London. Mr Ellwood's plans are indefinite, but there is a possibility of his settling in Sydney, and he will go there to-morrow. Mr J. Duncan, of the harbourmaster's department, Lyttelton has been granted a pilot's license' for the port of Lyttelton. A decision to this effect was made at a meeting of the Lyttelton Harbour Board on Saturday, when a report was received from the Board of Examiners for pilots at Lyttelton that Mr Duncan had sat voluntarily for the examination and had exceeded the 50 per cent, of the marks entitling him to a pass.
Mr Malcolm Fraser, C.V.0., retiring Under-Secretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, took farewell of the Minister and staff of bis department. Sir Alexander Young, "> in making a presentation, said Mr Fraser went out of the department with first-class references and a "clean sheet," in addition to the department's good wishes and congratulations. Mr A. W. Pine, chiei clerk, speaking for the staff, referred principally to Mr Fraser's association with the Public Service Superannuation Office at its inception. Mr Fraser. in reply, paid a high tribute to the sense of duty and loyalty shown by all members of the department.
