QUINNAT SALMON
MANY FISHERMEN OUT AT WEEK-END MAIN RUN NOT YET STARTED Many anglers were out on the Canterbury salmon rivers yesterday, but so far as could be found out, not many fish were caught. As some good catches had been made in the week, it had been anticipated that the season would begin in earnest, but experienced fishermen among those who were out were definite in the opinion last evening that the main run had not yet started.
It is known that seven fish were caught at the mouth of the Rakaia and three at Stewart's Gully at the junction of the north branch of the Waimakariri with the main stream. None of the fish was unusually big, three weighing 201b, three between 17 and 181b, and one 121b. There were 20 or 30 fishermen at the Rakaia and they were scattered over a large area. The river was at its normal level and • fishable, though not as clear as it sometimes is. The number of anglers on the Waimakariri was estimated to be about 150, and of these the greater number were at the mouth. The four fishermen who hold netting licenses took 54 fish there on one day during the week. No reports were available from the Rangitata, the Hurunui, or the Waiau. The Rangitata had been slightly discoloured, but seemed to be improving towards the end of the week. The Hurunui had been fairly clear and a run had already taken place in the Waiau.
