♦ GREYMOUTH GOLF CLUB TO THE TKESS.} GREYMOUTH, March 2. Mr W. Meldrum presided over an attendance of 40 members at the annual meeting of the Greymouth Golf Club, held last evening. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr W. Meldrum; club captain, Mr E. Warnes; vice-captain, Mr W. P. McCarthy; secretary, Mr W. J. Chatfield; treasurer, Mr F. W. Shallcrass; committee, Messrs J. Cairney, A. K. Smith, 11. C. Garde, A. C. Thurlow, and R. A. McSorily; auditor, Mr G. S. Pratt. The president's annual report, was read and adopted. The opening day was fixed for April 6. The club's appreciation of the work done by Mr J. Cairney, hon-

orary supervisor of the grounds and the greens, was recorded in the minutes. It was decided to recommend to the committee that the club be represented at the New Zealand Championships at Shirley, in October. Twenty new members were elected. Women's Institute The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the Greymouth Women's Institute, yesterday afternoon: —President, Mrs C. Chalk; vice-presi-dents, Mrs T. Collins and Mrs A. Thompson: secretary, Mrs C. M. Tilleyshort; treasurer, Mrs L. McNeill; committee, Mesdames J. Steel, jun., J. Beck. H. Longstaff, M. Sheard, N. Thompson, W. Callery, J. Baty, J. Wright, and A. Dalziel. The secretary and Mrs T. Jones were appointed delesates to the half-yearly council meeting. It was decided to submit the names of Mesdames Black, Callery, McNeill, and Tilleyshort for the West Coast Federation. Mrs E. Parfitt was appointed official accompanist. Presen-

tations were made as follows: —Crystal vases to Miss Gibb (highest points in competitions during the year) and to Mrs A. Thompson (runner-up), and lo Mrs Tilleyshort. in appreciation of her work as secretary. Th Mines Prospects for work at the district mines next week are brighter than for some considerable time. The James, Wallsend, and Blackball mines will work a full week. Liverpool will work on four days, and Dobson will commence on Tuesday. Monthly Returns The vital statistics for Greymouth for the month of February, 1935, with comparisons for the corresponding month of last year shown in parenthesis, are:—Births, 22 (22); deaths, 6 (9); marriage licenses issued, 12 (8); marriages by Registrar, 1 (1). During the month of February the rainfall at Greymouth was 7.30 inches, which fell on five days, the heaviest fall for any one day being 2.77 inches on February 19. On February 20 the fall was 2.06 inches, and on February 22 it was 1.30 inches. In February last year the rainfall was 2.21 inches, which fell on eight days. The highest fall for any one day was 0.50 inches. The revenue collected at the Greymouth Customhouse during February amounted to £9538 16s 3d, compared with £7692 9s 9d in February last year, an increase of £1846 6s 6d. Customs returned £3183 14s Bd, or £5lO Is 4d of an increase on last February, and sales tax £1513 19s 9d, an increase of £l6B 14s 7d.

Arrivals at the port of Greymouth last month totalled 21, aggregating 11,291 tons, while 24 vessels (13,763 tons) left the port. In February, 1934, there were 22 arrivals (12,544 tons), and 21 departures (12,600 tons), and in February, 1933, 20 arrivals, and 20 departures. Relief of Distress Mr A. A. Adams, who has been a member of the Mayor's Unemployment Relief Committee since its inception, has given notice that he intends to resign" at the end of the present term (April). The Mayor (Mr J. W. Grccnsladc) stated that later he will have placed on record a suitable acknowledgment of the .fine work that Mr Adams has accomplished on the committee. Band Concert The Municipal Band, which met with such success at the recent Dominion contest, gave a concert in the Town Hall on Thursday evening, in aid of the Rugby Union's Queen Carnival. Among the assisting artists was the Westport cornctist, Mr J. Robertson, who was given an enthusiastic reception. The programme comprised numbers by the band, songs by Miss Gladys Higson and Mr H. Boote, violin solos by Miss C. Keating, cornet solos by Mr Robertson, a trombone solo by Mr L. Carruthers. humorous recitations by

Miss Ida McDonald, and dances by Miss Pat Gifkins. During the evening the Mayor (Mr J. W. Greenslade) congratulated the band and the conductor (Mr L. Francis) on their fine performance at the contest, and on the credit they had brought to Greymouth. Excursion to Chrisleliurch The Karoro Sports Club has arranged for an excursion train to Christchurch on Easter Sunday. From enquiries made already, it is anticipated that a large number will make the trip. Ross Picnic The annual picnic of the Ross School was held at Greymouth yesterday, in ideal weather. More than 230 passengers arrived by the train, at 11.20 a.m., and returned at 5.30 p.m. Public Works Contracts Contracts have been let by the Public Works Department at Greymouth as follows: —Reinforced concrete bridge,

about 40 feet, over Devil's creek, on the Reefton-Big River section of the Main Highway: Mr C. O'Donnell; reinforced concrete bridge, in one 12 foot span over Gow's creek, near Ruatapu, on the Teremakau-Ross section of the Main Highway: Messrs W. E. and E. Martin. Funeral The funeral of Mr Clement John Rundlc took place yesterday afternoon at Karoro cemetery, and was largely attended. The services were conducted lby the Rev. H. R. Fell. Miners Injured A miner named George Young, employed at the Blackwater mine, sustained a severe injury to his eye through a piece of stone flying from a hole during the withdrawal of the boring machine. Another miner named B. Commeti sustained a severely cut arm requiring six stitches. Both men were brought lo Reefton for medical treatment. Reefton Jockey Club At a meeting of the committee of the Reefton Jockey Club, Mr E. W. Spencer was nominated as the club's representative to the district committee, and also as delegate to the New Zealand Racing Conference. The report of the programme committee for the autumn meeting, with £560 in stakes, was approved. Bowls Th" final match m the Lennie-Auld pairs competition was played during the week, when D. HOKITIKA MAGISTRATE'S COURT (SPBCIAL TO TBS PRISS.) HOKITIKA, March 2. At the Magistrate's Court in Hokitika yesterday, before Mr H. Morgan, S.M., tire following cases were dealt with: —

A man found on the premises of the Masonic Hotel after hours was fined 10s and ordered to pay costs, and two men for being on the premises of the Commercial Hotel after hours were each fined 15s and ordered to pay costs. For failing to send children to school W. D. Nolan and T. Duggan, of Okuru, who both pleaded guilty, were convicted without penalty. Nolan explained that there was dissatisfaction at the school and some o£ the children had been withdrawn and had received instruction from a private teacher. This teacher had since left and the children had been receiving tuition at home, pending the securing of another private teacher.

Judgment by default was given in the case Mason, Struthers, Ltd., v. William Morris, £lO and costs. Charges of disorderly behaviour were preferred against William A. Baird, Patrick McQuilken, Charles E. Sanders, Albert J. Collett, and Patrick Warren. Each was fined £1 and ordered to pay costs. William Pascoe pleaded guilty to a charge of assault. He claimed that there was provocation. The case arose cut of the impounding of a hosse by William E. Gaylor, borough inspector, who stated that he visited the owner's house twice with the object of informing him of the whereabouts of his horse, but found no one home. On the third visit the assault took place. Defendant wanted to know why he had not been informed earlier, and declared he had been home all the previous day. The magistrate said that inspectors must be protected, and fined defendant £3 and ordered him to pay costs £1 Is. M. Singer, for not having a driver's license, was ordered to pay costs. Personal Mr W. Wilson, manager of the Hokitika Savings Bank, and Mrs Wilson are leaving on a trip to England and the Continent. Mr Wilson has been granted leave by the bank trustees and will attend the World Savings Bank Conference at Paris in May. Mr W. Winchester has been appointed to relieve Mr Wilson. Messrs G. Davidson and F. McCabe left this morning for Napier, where they will represent the Westland Hospital Board at the annual conference of the New Zealand Hospital Boards' Association. Telegraph Office The Hokitika postmaster (Mr R. Cox) advises that from Monday, March 4, the post office will be open for acceptance and delivery of telegrams from 7 to 8 o'clock each evening except Sundays.
